Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have spent many years in speech therapy with 5 out of 6 of our dc. The first 3 of that group have no trace of their former articulation problems. BUT 2 of the dc still (ages 13 and 17) do not produce clear "r" sounds. They *know* what to do, but it just gets lost in connected speech. Does anyone know of an on-line source or have any suggestions from your own experience about how to address this? I am thinking that 15 minutes daily of concentrated practice with me would go far toward making clearer speech a habit; I just don't know which words to work on as models for correct r's,the progression from initial r's, to blends, to "Ir" sounds, all that sort of thing. I really, really don't want to go back to speech therapy ($$$$, time). Is it even reasonable that working on our own could help?

Peace,
Nancy

My (now 15 yo) son couldn't say his Rs when he was 12 and I purchased THIS BOOK. We worked through it through the summer months, and although he didn't *instantly* begin saying his Rs in everyday speech, within a few months he was saying them correctly nearly all the time. Now, his speech is perfect.

I was afraid it would be too babyish, but basically the book helps to isolate the sound in tricky places. My son could concentrate and put the R at the beginning correctly, but in the middle or at the end of words it was difficult. This book worked on all three. Check out the reviews at amazon - other people have used it for adults or older children. If I recall, it's a somewhat thin book, but it was very effective for us.

Hope that helps. :)

My son who is now 13 could not say his Rs properly either. To give him concentrated practice I took a stack of index cards and wrote R words on them that he used in everyday speech. Some words had the R in the beginning, in the middle and at the end. I also had cards that had funny silly sentences on them that used a lot of R words.

Here's an example:

Berty Snerty blurted out the worst possible answer to the really twirty-flirty workbook problem.

Please return early Mister Turtle and put your dirty shirty in the Turkey Lurkey laundry basket.

We went over those cards everyday and he eventually got it! It took about 6 months of concentrated practice.
