Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found at
Catholic Culture
a little article about saying goodbye to the Alleluia during the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.

I found this while searching for ways to prayerfully engage children at the alleluia during Mass. What do you tell your children about the Alleluia and its disappearance for Lent?

In our Atrium, we make a big deal about hiding the prayer card that says "Alleluia". It's kind of a fun way to remind the children that there is something decidedly distinct about the season of Lent.

Peace,
Nancy

We make a white felt banner with glitter glue and colored glue pens. It has alleluia written across it with spring flowers that the kids paint on with the glue and add some glitter gems. After it dries I roll it up, put it in a box and "bury" it under the couch in a box till Easter Sunday. Then we unfurl it and it decorates our house for the Easter season.

The girls just decorated their own 8x11 piece of paper with big "alleluia" written on it. We'll hide them under our purple banner that hangs on the wall once it goes up on Tuesday evening right b4 bed.

They come out for use as decorations on Easter Sunday.

Also, we have been practicing singing the Alleluia VERY LOUDLY this week, after explaining that this Sunday is the last time we'll hear it for awhile.

Explaining throughout the week:

Alleluia = Praise the Lord!
Israelites used to shout this after return from a winning battle. (maybe reading a couple of old testament battle scenes)
It's because Jesus resurrected that we sing it.
During Lent we "fast" from singing it b/c we're focusing on Jesus DYING for our sins.

We did this last year, with our beautiful Alleluia under a purple cloth on top of our family altar - we are very aware of the alleluia being 'buried' as my oldest, Jack and I sing in a Gregorian Chant choir -- no more alleluias very soon! I love then in the Easter season though, compensation is definately made for it!

Coming back to say, we made it very colourful and stuck small, glitery butterflies all over the carboard scroll the alleluia was glued to.

I'm grateful for these ideas too! We talk about NOT singing ALLELUIA during but Lent -- but never in such kid friendly, fun and exciting ways!

Thanks for all the ideas!

Here's another variation.

My mom had a special blown egg that she wrote Alleluia on. On Ash Wed, we put it in a box and buried it outside. OF course, this was a big hit with my brothers cuz they got to dig in the snow and frozen dirt to hide the egg/box. It was also neat b/c when we dug it up on Easter Sunday, the ground wasn't frozen anymore.

Suzanne, Could you elaborte a bit on your purple wall banner? I usually cover statues/pictures w/ a purple cloth, but with the house on the market I need to do something more, um, understated. One purple cloth on the wall might work. Hmmm, Maybe two sided, with the Alleluia on the other side? Simply turn it around? Thanks!

Libby taught the choir an Alleluia in round today, and it sounds great. As we finish (a capella), it will simply fade away into the air...

Wish you all could hear it. The choir sings it in unison, then the congregation sings it with Libby, and the choir comes in on the third beat.

Lisa:
It is a 45" piece of purple fabric hemmed on top and bottom. It is about 5 feet long.    I hang it on the wall on Tues night, and we use it mainly for the stations of the cross. The kids take turns attaching (pinning or taping depending on the age) the next station. This year, I'm finding more ways to "hang things" from the Stations of the Cross Box on the banner. I want the items to attach to the banner. And, then the Alleluia signs are hidden behind.

This is the very simple version.
You could make these as fancy and beautiful as you wanted, similar to the banners that hang in church.

I LOVE the idea of a double sided banner....one side purple, the other white and gold with Alleluia on it!!! At your "domestic church" Easter vigil on Saturday night (if you don't go to the REAL one), you could light candles, and sing Alleluia while dad turns it around.

As girls get older and learn needlework, every year they could add a new resurrection/Easter symbol to the banner, not letting anyone see it until THAT MOMENT. Everyone could Ooooo and aaaaaa over it.

I wish Libby could sing at our parish!

The thought of people viewing a house on the market and walking into it with purple cloths draped everywhere makes me giggle!

MacBeth, I am sure it is beautiful and very effective - we do a Kyrie in the round and it is spectacular with everyone's voice doubling over each others and our Kyrie has (to me) a Russian 'feel' to it.

It sounds like a lovely 'letting go...' of the alleluias!

Elizabeth, we do the purple ribbons too, it was a lovely simplified way of imitating the covering of statues with purple cloths (less expensive too!)

Here's an idea I thought of today after reading everyone's postings: My almost 3yo is painting pictures right now (yes, at quarter to 10 at night!), just with yellow, pink and blue - lots and lots of papers. When they dry, I will write Alleluia on all of them and he can help me hide them around the house on Ash Wednesday, to be looked for on Easter Sunday. It will be a great game to find them throughout Lent and remind ourselves that we are waiting to say this word again, and remind myself the reason why we wait and the wonderful Jesus gave us in Himself. So Joshua may not get a whole lot out of it, but he'll remember and build on it next year.

God Bless!
