Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Since we are planning a cross-country trip in spring 2007, I was wondering about all of the Catholic shrines that dot the USA. Gwen mentioned one near her home (Could you post it, Gwen, please?)

We can kind of do a "roll call" of shrines. Then, this thread will be waiting for anybody who needs the info.

Do YOU live near a shrine? Do you know of shrines? Also, any great churches, historically speaking? Please give websites, if you are able.

I have one: it is SAINT MARY'S IN THE MOUNTAINS in Virginia City, Nevada.

And, you know what's really cool about this church???

It is the church my husband and I got married in! (OH! Sounds like a new thread idea! )

Check out the gorgeous altar on the front page of the website.

And, the shrines do not need to be on MY path......this is all useful info!

Blessings,

Anyways it is a Maronite church, it has the oldest liturgy in the church. Absolutly breathtaking liturgy and Icons.

Divine Mercy in Stockbridge Mass is a favorite of ours.

I found it Molly; it's not far from us either but we haven't made it there yet:

National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon

My children love to walk through the woods here:

Sorrowful Mother Shrine - Bellevue, Ohio

Another beauty:

Basilica of Our Lady of Victory - near Buffalo, NY

Hi Chari,

I'm not sure if you'll make it to Philadelphia but we really enjoyed the Shrine of St. John Neumann.

My favorite is the
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower.

We visit every time we're in San Antonio visiting my dh's family. Relics of St. Therese are there and the original painting from her canonization, painted by her sister Celine.

Here it is Chari: Mother Cabrini Shrine

It is in the foothills outside of Morrison. There isn't much on the site right now. But there is a chapel and gift shop in the main building and an outdoor picnic area, then a few hundred steps with the Stations of the Cross and at the top, a gigantic statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and spectacular views.

I saw your thread about KS as well. I'll look it up in the Catholic Tourist Guide.

My bil wrote this comprehensive article on the U.S. Basilicas for his Catholic History site. Lists all of the ones in the United States.

Here is a listing by state of shrines in the U.S. This site also has a listing by state of the basilicas, but it isn't complete - only lists about 40 of the 60. So I don't know if this shrine listing is complete or not.

I have never been to it, but there is a St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell, MA. Actually, I had never heard of it till you started this thread, Chari, so thank you very much!

Baltimore's newly restored Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is beautiful and offers wonderful tours after Mass and on weekdays.
