Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anyone familiar with St. Elutherios? I've been trying to find info online about him and haven't found much of anything.

The reason I ask is that my priest came yesterday evening and prayed the blessing for expectant mothers for me and one of the saint's names mentioned in the intercessory prayers was St. Elutherios (along with St. Raymond and St. Gerard).

I asked Father who he was and he told me that he was a saint from the early church who was imprisoned for his faith. The guards were going to execute a pregnant woman and St. Elutherios begged the guards to take him instead. When they asked him if he was crazy, he said that because the Son of God took on human flesh in the womb of a Woman, the wombs of mothers are holy and he could not allow someone to harm this expectant mother. The guards let her go and he received the crown of martyrdom immediately. So he has since been known as a special patron of pregnant mothers.

Has anyone else heard of him? It's all new to me, but I've been very moved by his story.

Katherine,

This is meager information....excerpted from a book written in the late 19th century. Eleutherios is only briefly mentioned, unfortunately.

You can read about it here.

Thank you! Now it's starting to make sense. When I did the searches before it was coming up as St. Eleutherios, the Pope of Rome. That's why it was so confusing.

I didn't realize how early of a saint he is (early 2nd century!). I wish I could find a detailed account of his martyrdom including the pregnant woman. But the story you found on his martyrdom with his own mother is beautiful.

Now if only I could find his Icon!

Then I'll consider you to be Santa's Elf, Elizabeth.
