Since it's a new year, I was resolving to study the Bible more. I noticed that Scott Hahn has published a study Bible of various books of the New Testament. Has anyone used one of his and have any feedback? Or have a recommendation for something else?

I'm a new forum member, so I also don't know if I posted this correctly!

I have never used Scott Hahn's study Bible. I do have a Bible that our priest gave to all of the volunteers at church. It is called My Daily Catholic Bible. It has readings from the Old and New Testament for every day of the year. Fr. says that after reading it everyday, a person will have read the entire Bible. Each day also has a quot from a saint. It is not really a study, but for me, it is a good way to make sure I do give the Bible some of my time. It is published by Our Sunday Visitor.

Dear Jen,

I don't have an adult Bible recommendation but I would like to recommend The Great Adventure dvd by Jeff Cavins and Our Father's Plan with Jeff Cavins & Scott Hahn. Both of these programs can give you a very good overall perspective of Bible/salvation history.

I also like this Bible for middle schoolers. I'm not crazy about the pictures but it is written from a historical perspective.

I've also heard very good things about the commentary on the Navarre Bible.

Have you ever looked at the Navarre Bibles? Those commentaries are terrific. They are helpful to "study" but also meditation. I highly recommend trying that route. Let me know if you need links.

I don't think I can give suggested order, except to say start with the New Testament.

For a good Bible Study course, Introduction to the Bible by Scott Hahn et al is a high school textbook, but if you never studied anything about the Bible and want some good grounding, this is very good.

Navarre Bible is printed by Scepter Press. It's the RSVCE version, with Navarre Commentary. There are a variety of forms they have printed. There are single books of the Bible, groupings, like St. Paul's letters, the Gospels.

They have been around for a while, and while I'm sending you to the main publisher site, I'd suggest searching for some used versions. And, every year at NACHE Conference when they were in Manassas Scepter Press had a table of 1/2 off on seconds...and Navarre was always there. Not sure if they went to Baltimore or not. If they are, my plan of action would buy one or two for now, plan your reading schedule and get the bargains.

I've also have been blessed to find copies at used book sales, too. I know this is a thread for recommending good books, and not how to find bargains...sorry for the distraction.

Thanks for all the great information, Jenn! I have had my eye on that Scott Hahn book for a while (back before I knew who Scott Hahn was, lol). It looks wonderful. Our local Carmelite shop has one or two of the Navarre Bible books on hand - I will take a closer look when I pop in this weekend. (It is perilously convenient that their shop opens right as I am leaving the chapel. )

Thanks for the video recommendation, Brenda. I'm going to check if NetFlix has it (got a gift certificate to use ther :-)

As for Bible study, last year, I got a lot out of using the Navarre Bible and this book - St. John's Gospel: A Bible Study Guide and Commentary for Individuals and Groups by Steven K. Ray (Ignatius Press).

Steve Ray's are some other videos that are on my Netflix list.
