Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was searching for the beautiful ornament of OLOG that MaryM shared last year.

There is a lot more info here for anyone putting together a unit.

We are going to *try* to make a few.

Oh my! I just had time to look over the second page of the thread.

Jenn, the ornaments your nephews made are also beautiful!

Which to do....which to do....

Both.

Anyone got any good OLOG Recipes? I was thinking we could do some of the 'cooking for Christ' ideals, and got stuck on this one (DH doesn't tend to eat Mexican foods

Since I love Mexican food I can hardly understand this.

Anyway, I'm assuming it might be that he doesn't tend to like the spicy, tortilla/masa type foods which are most common. Maybe you could go the dessert route.

This site has several cookie recipes including the common Christmas cookie - Biscochitos, though some don't care for anise cookies.

And another site with a variety of desserts.

We love sopapillas - don't think you can go wrong with those (unless there is an aversion to deep-fried foods!)

How about real Mexican hot chocolate. My kids don't like it as well (stronger, not as sweet as Hersheys )

Thnks Mary... his dislike is the TOMATOES in anything, so spicy is not an issue...
He's just picky (and allergic to a bunch of things too... nuts, chocolate... the GOOD stuff!! That's OK though, because it means MORE FOR ME!!

Whenever we visit my MIL, she gives us this hot chocolate. DH laughed at me the first time I had it. I had no idea hot chocolate could be so....different.      I always beg DH to finish it off for me. LOL

We may try our hands at Tamales. My oldest won't stop asking since we read Too Many Tamales.

We explained it's a tradition at Christmas for Grandma to make these...with all her daughters coming to help. MIL mails a huge box full every Christmas....I have never had one. DH is happy to work through them all by himself.

How about fajitas?

We'll be making Mexican Wedding cookies. We'll have to buy the Tamales...my d-i-l's family will be making them but not until Christmas.

We get to make the ornaments Monday with MaryM herself!

I've written an article about celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe feast day on the O Night Divine blog. There are many resources and links listed.

And happy St. Juan Diego feast day today!

Mary, I saw the article this morning and have been saving it to read tonight. It looks wonderful. Thank you so much!

Josefina's Cook Book, from the American Girl doll series

I got to thinking Sunday night (while making tortillas with this cookbook) that this is a great basic, easy intro to Mexican cooking. It has all the basics, with great pictures and instructions.

No aversion here!    We'll be frying up a big batch of sopapillas tomorrow. Doesn't everyone own a Fry Daddy!

I also ordered 2 dozen tamales from a little Catholic family-owed Mexican restaurant. (Benefit of living in Texas on this particular feast).

My doctor has told me to cut back on carbohydrates after my Thanksgiving weigh in, so I thought I should round it out with pork tamales and deep fried dough dipped in honey.

Bumping...
with some links to other threads, so they are all together.

Guadalupe Music
Mexican Recipes for O.L. Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe (picture book recommendations)
The Science of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Ideas for Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe

Make sure to check out the link in the first post of this thread - it goes back to a really extensive thread from 2005.

I'm realizing I started several of those threads - hmmmm...guess I really like this feast day...

We're going to 6AM mass--in Spanish! There are Mariachi singers and menudo for breakfast afterwards, then people head off to work/school. It always seems like such a crazy thing to do w/ LOs, but it's fun.

Nice to see some links to crafts, here. I think we'll do one for the first time.

I'm sure this link is somewhere in the threads listed here but since 12/9 is Sunday I thought I'd repost what we like to do for the feast of St. Juan Diego and O.L. of Guadalupe. We printed out these dolls from Paper Dali. On 12/9, the feast of St. Juan Diego we will put up the St. Juan doll with a cardboard stand. He was colored about 2-3 years ago and we keep the same doll. Then on 12/12, we will add O.L. of Guadalupe, AND St. Juan's tilma which is included at the Paper Dali site. We read Tomie dePaola's book and have the same special friend over for this feast every year.

We have never made it to Las Mananitas....it is to early!!

Some other ideas for crafts from various blogs:
Paper Shrines
Yogurt Cup Saints: Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego
Paper tilma
OLoG Mary's Mantle Lantern

I can't find the source for these cute felt ornaments but the picture on Pinterest looks simple enough.

There are lots of more detailed OLoG felt ornaments for sale on Etsy.

Oh my gosh - these Hershey's kisses are so great for the feast day - unfortunately that takes some planning ahead to remember to buy them since they aren't sold in regular stores on a regular basis!!
