Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We had a really great homily today! It included poetry by W. H. Auden on human suffering, the legend of Icarus, and a stern warning (based on the readings, of course!) to all of us to be ready to accept the consequences of our actions/failures to act. When Father spoke in terms of, "If you had to cut off your hand to get into Heaven, wouldn't you cut it off? Or, perhaps there's another path, to choose to do things for others," you could have heard a pin drop. He pointed out that God does look after the widow, the orphan, the poor, the unborn, the elderly, and if we succumb to our world's culture and ignore these "little ones," we are failing to act...and God will see this.

When he got to, "Jesus is coming to you in your lifetime," (particular judgment), it got even quieter.

Wow.

Double wow.

Let's hope that all those very quiet listeners were truly listening.

I'd love to hear about other parishes' way of drawing attention to God's gift of life today...

Lucky.

We had the closest thing to a fire and brimstone spiel I've ever gotten at a Catholic Church including a description of Hell followed by a resounding chorus of Kum-by-ya (however you spell that campfire song).

*sigh*

We went to a different parish than we normally do today, and the priest talked about how Planned Parenthood, abortion providers, and pro-choice politicians are "leading little ones to sin" by tempting them to abortion when they are in vulnerable and difficult situations. He spoke about how a child develops in its mother's womb. He also exhorted us to pray the Rosary EVERY DAY during the month of October (which is Respect Life Month) for an end to abortion, especially for the closing of the last abortion mill here in Wichita. I felt really fired up and am re-dedicating myself to praying EVERY DAY for an end to abortion!

I've heard this priest's homilies before, and he frequently gives pro-life homilies, even homilies preaching against contraception (which you don't hear much of these days!). I really admire him for his bravery and faithfulness and I think he is an example of how the newer, younger priests are generally very faithful to the Church's teachings. He is a great sign of hope to me. Our parish priest is also VERY pro-life, and although we haven't been able to make it to church there for a few weeks due to dh's work schedule, I'm sure he's been giving pro-life homilies every week, too. The last election year, we heard a pro-life homily nearly every week from May to November!

Well as usual, I only heard snippets, usually enough to think I'd like to hear more but when dh has to work...

I do know he spoke against abortion and he mentioned that 1 out of 3 children have been killed by abortion (cause I was thinking that would mean out of my 6, 2 would have been killed )

And I know he spoke of the Life Chain.. and I won't get to that this year.. I just can't without my dh to help.
