Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do any of you wise and wonderful moms have any inspirational ideas for a special gift for a First Communicant (girl)?

My dd, Mary Grace, is receiving her First Holy Communion May 1st as is her best little friend, Hannah, who also happens to be dh's godchild! Hannah's parents are getting Mary Grace a James Avery charm bracelet with a First Communion charm (they are also getting one for Hannah). I would like to give a gift to Hannah that is as thoughtful. Any ideas beyond the usual engraved pewter frame, etc.?? I thought a special Rosary would be nice, but I discovered that Hannah's grandmother has traditionally gotten all the siblings a Rosary...

My mommy-brain is coming up empty and time is running out. Help, please??

i'm glad you started this -- i was thinking of giving our Paco a rosary; he's got one of those big wooden bead ones, but i thought it was maybe time to graduate from that .... but perhaps his own Bible, or his own prayer book.... and then i'm out of ideas and i'd like to hear more. i'm looking at all these catalogs but nothing quite hits me as being particularly suited to him.

I also need some ideas. My goddaughter's family actually owns a Catholic gift and bookstore, so I need something unique.

I can offer some suggestions for others. Books are always my mainstay. One idea is the book The Weight of a Mass. Very appropriate for 1st Communion.

Secondly, my nephew received the Mass kit from Our Father's House. Just beautiful. There are quite a few items that would be appropriate from their site.

I have another idea I'm toying with, since my niece has so much available to her. Mary Gildersleeve wrote a Glory of America Knits!, a knitting book with projects that coordinate with the 1800s Catholic America kit, so I would include those books with the Knitting book. Not exactly communionish, but isn't seeing Catholics in action part of the process in living your faith? She is a beginner knitter and loves to do art projects, so I was hoping either for a book and/or projects that bring in the faith. Is this too wacky for a 1st communion gift?

Jenn,

I think the knitting book idea is a great one. It's very thoughtful and personalized to suit your niece's interests!

I just ordered some items from OFH and didn't even think to look there for ideas...    I've been meaning to buy The Weight of the Mass since I saw it written up in the most recent issue of Faith and Family magazine...

Keep the ideas coming, ladies!

I have a very close friend who gave a beautiful crystal rosary box to each of my older daughters for her first communion. I would also recommend a statue of her patron saint. My Hannah has a lovely statue of St. Anne in her room. Any other religious art, such as an icon, would also be a good idea.
