Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What can you tell me about scapulars? My dd got one for her First Communion but I do not know how to explain to her why to wear it, what it is for, and what about getting it blessed?
TIA,
Darlene

Here's some information on scapulars from another thread. I had the very same questions when my ds received his 2 years ago in second grade!

Hi Darlene,

As a mom, I love reading about all the background of and reasoning for a practice within our faith. Yet, when it comes to conveying what I know to children, I need to remind myself to keep it simple and to their level of questioning. I'm such a blabber and can easily overwhelm! So, I have shared with children...

I wear a scapular to remind me to stop and pray. Whenever I take off or put on my brown scapular, I am reminded to pray...Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Pray for us. Whenever it finds its way out of my shirt, I tuck it back in and pray again. I love being reminded to pray because sometimes I forget. I want to make sure that I pray and spend time with God and the Saints so that we know each other, just like I spend time with you so that we know each other better. There are different scapulars and each has an interesting story about how it came about. Do you want to hear more about your scapular?

Often the answer is, "No," which is just fine. As children grow and pray and hang around with other who are growing and praying, they ask more questions and learn more at their own pace. At least, that has been my experience with my children, nieces, and others in my sphere of influence .

BTW, I wasn't raised knowing about scapulars. I began wearing mine only a few years ago. It is one of my favorite devotions. To me, I feel so very Catholic, wearing it. I'm also grateful for the blessings I have received through growing in faith this way.

Love,
