This year, we are working through The Great Adventure Kids Bible Study, which has been really nice.
It is a children's version of The Bible Timeline, which is an adult Bible study for Catholics. (And it is FABULOUS, too, BTW!)
The Kids version takes you through the narrative books of the Bible, so it tells the story of Salvation History in a more flowing way ... Each historical period is color-coded for easy memorization, and the timeline shows the bloodline of Jesus going all the way to Adam and other cool facts.
For our weekly Bible study, we review last week's story, and then I simply read the story, and we discuss it. There is a coloring book, and my girls usually color while I'm reading. There also is a deck of cards that includes various games to help learn the story of Salvation History.
There also is a teen version ...

I certainly understand why! I was expecting a bit more guidance, such as how-tos or questions about the story ... But there really isn't anything! What I have done with my girls has definitely worked, as simple as it is. They really are learning the story of Salvation History. When a Bible story comes up somewhere else, like in our religion text or Little Flowers, they get excited that they're already familiar with the story ... and how it connects to another aspect of our Faith.

When we first did it, we read through the coloring book, reading the correlating Scriptures straight from the Bible. Gave my son the coordinating image in the cards; then every 4-6 cards, we mix them up and place them in order as a game.
He was old enough then that matching was an easy task so we just did very quickly; but then did things like Memory, then place the matches in order on the timeline. Eventually removing the timeline and putting the cards in order as we found matches (or play go-fish and do the same thing with matches).
We also played games with "do you have such-and-such that comes right after another-such-and-such" (so more information was needed).
More recently we've played rummy with it - requiring lots of sequences, but also allowing sets for events that happeend in the same time period.
I wrote a long review of it on here a long time ago - I think it's still on here somewhere :)
While we've not had it out in maybe the last 6 months, we do enjoy it when we do pull it out; and the games have just become more complex as we go - with my son coming up with the most interesting challenges :)

These are great ideas for the cards, which we really haven't used yet! But I can see how they would really help in learning the order of events. I think I will try to do some of the games with my girls over the summer, as a way to keep things fresh in their minds.
We are only up to the Royal Kingdom, so I am wondering if I should just keep going this summer? I don't know about stopping at the beginning of June and then picking up again in the fall. That might seem a bit disjointed. Thoughts??

Ordinary Time is about growing in the faith - there is really so little time during the other seasons to really get into Bible history (the entire thing, not just highlights), so in my own mind - this is the perfect time to be doing just such a study :)
