Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are there any sets of books or a single book w/ multiple saints that can get us started? A picture or two and simple wording would help them get familiar w/ the saints at a young age, and since they're little boys interested in heroes & dramatic acts, I'd like them to learn from "the best". It would be nice to have an easy reference in the house w/ many of the more well-known saints.

We enjoy Once Upon a Time Saints and More Once Upon a Time Saints as well as the individual story books by Tomie dePaola.

We really just enjoy picture books on the saints at this age. I have learned of so many great titles just by reading along with the liturgical year threads here. This would be a great time for you to begin collecting. Just start a list as you read through the Liturgical Year Planning threads. You might also consider subscribing to this forum so you can see anytime someone posts on this topic, and add to your list. Then, either seek those books out at the library, or find them in used book sales and start building your own home library of the saints. Our liturgical year and saints picture books are read and treasured each year and the children never tire of them....including the teenage children!

As far as a little collection of saints, I really like Daniel Lord's Miniature Stories of the Saints which are available in 4 small little books. The little collection of 4 books was recently republished in a hardcover, one volume book, but I can't find it to link it for you. Sorry!

A lot of the compilations of saints lives I have come across are sort of dry for little kids. Lots of factual information, but you want an inspiring story! We use a lot of the individual picture books about the saints for anyone under 6 or so. If you look into the Catholic Mosaic Booklist and the liturgical year planning threads (linked above!) you find a lot of real gems!

For my older son, we are using Saints for Young Readers for Everyday Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 along with the aforementioned picture books. He likes having more factual information and knowing the saint for everyday.

I'm going to start with this, since it got such great reviews. I think we'll branch out to more in-depth studies as they get older, and have specific interests.

Thanks for recommending the other threads on planning for the liturgical year. That was how I got to this topic in the first place!

A beautiful otpion for picture book of saints isSaints Lives and Illuminations by Ruth Sanderson. It has lovely depictions of saints from the first millennium.

And the sequel, More Saints Lives and Illuminations. It covers saints and blessed from the second millennium.

I posted info with a listing of saints covered in the books on my blog awhile back.

There is a newer book that combines the saints from both books and is printed in a smaller format. It is nice because you can get all the saints for the saime price as one of the larger format books. I really like the beauty of the larger format illustrations so it's hard to say with is a better option.
