Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Okay, I'm a bit desperate here!

I volunteered way back in Sept. to coordinate a service project during Lent in conjuction with our Little Flowers group/homeschooling group. In the past, we have always mass-produced a craft and driven across the street to the nursing home and passed out the craft/gifts to the elderly residents. It has always been a meaningful way to reach out and serve the elderly...but we are thinking the kids need something new to do this year...

I am feeling a bit depleted in the creative department and also a bit overwhelmed at home and am looking for a simple way to make this project special, yet simple. I was thinking of having the kids gather a spiritual bouquet for the Holy Father (by perhaps praying the Rosary for him together as a group_ and mailing it to the Vatican...but that isn't really an "active" service project...though it would be neat to do... Any ideas? Please????

A few local ladies made a stack a beautiful flannel baby blankets for our Crisis Pregnancy Center. Our clients were so blessed to have beautiful, new, handmade blankets for their little ones. The design was very simple: two coordinating flannel pieces sewn together, with a simple blanket-stitched edge. And, they were nice and big...perfect for swaddling!

My Brownie troop is making blankets as well. The girls are all 1st graders so we are doing those simple fleece blankets that you knot the fringed edges on. We are donating to a unique group out here called "Blanket Coverage." Among other things, they sneak up on sleeping street people and cover them up with blankets while they sleep. They also have a soup kitchen and a clothes closet as well as a few beds in their little building.

I second and third the baby blanket project . Some friends of mine have gotten together to quilt with our children and have made baby blankets. Several of the kids made tie blankets because they were too young to quilt. We have donated the blankets to the local medical center's NICU department to be given to disabled babies born there. We wanted the moms of disabled children to know how precious their children were. So many moms are overwhelmed with negative feelings and we wanted to share something positive with them.

I think it has really touched our children as well.

Some projects our group has done are: www.colorasmile.org
We simply color the pics and mail them there. Also we have a local place that gives out food baskets around the holidays- so the kids decorate the cardboard boxes that the food goes in. We have also collected supplies for the animal shelter and made cards for nursing homes.

Thanks so much for all your ideas, everyone!

I do like the blanket idea, but the timeframe won't allow us to complete such a project, AND we are actually going to make some baby quilts for our local Catholic crisis pregnancy center in Dallas, in our May/June Little Flowers classes...

The colorasmile.org site is really neat...Thanks, Tracy.

Keep the ideas coming, ya'll!
