Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found last year from Mary Ellen that there is another picture book, St. George and the Dragon by Geraldine McCaughrean. I think it's out of print, but keep your eyes out. I just found one last week at a book sale.

Combined with Saint George and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges, it makes for exciting reading for boys for this feast day.

The other aspect that is appealing to my son is that St. George was a martyr. His biography is a bit fuzzy, but they do believe he was a Roman soldier and wouldn't sacrifice to pagan gods, so Diocletian had him killed. So while the dragon aspect might be fictious, his death is even more brave and inspiring.

This feast is also appealing for my little girl because it is her name's day. St. Alexandra the Empress was the wife of Diocletian. She witnessed George's bravery during his martyrdom and converted to Christ, along with several pagan priests and witnesses. We always make Alexandra a dragon cake for her feast day, and call her our little Empress!

My dc are enthralled by St. George. Today we were reading about St. Mark, who is on the same page spread as St. George in the Fr. Lovasik Picture Book of Saints, so then we had to read George again when the kids saw him there. And pretend that Diocletian was the dragon that George killed, and talk about dragons (forever....)

On a side note, St. George's feast day is also a great chance to learn about komodo dragons. There are some really cool videos on U-tube.
My ds was all excited at first, but then I think he was scared, realizing that this type of dragon really does exist....

My son got nervous about komodo dragons, too, Melinda!

Our library was selling a book called Nikos and the Ikon by Terry Reid. It's OOP, 1969, middle reading age chapter book. It's an exciting story of a Greek shepherd boy Nikos. The church's revered icon of St. George is stolen, and he helps capture the thieves.

I think it would be a nice addition to this feast day reading.
