We would like to revert to the older practice of having dc confirmed shortly after FHC or the year after it.
Specificly, we'd like to confirm the oldest 3 boys next year at what will be grades 6, 5, and 3rd.
Has anyone else here done this?
What did you do to prepare as far as priest dealings and materials used to prepare?

My brother is doing this. I believe that he used the Baltimore Catechism First Communion ed, since that is designed to prepare kids for both, and then moved on to the next level of the BC. Their family has a very active faith life, and I'm sure there is more to the prep than that.
I also know that he has thought out his reasoning and backed it up with quotes from the CCC to discuss it with our family (he sent an email to all of us when he first started to plan for it), but the actual confirmation will be in Mexico thus bypassing dealing with local priests. I believe he is planning on having his 6 and 5 year olds confirmed whenever he can arrange the trip.

Hi Martha,
Our two oldest ds's received their confirmations when they were 9 & 10. Initially our priest denied our request because that's not the protocol of our diocese. I sent him a letter citing Canon Law which he forwarded to our Bishop. It was easily approved. I'm happy to send you the Canon Law link.

I'm curious Brenda. What diocese are you in? What else did you say in your letter? My friend has talked to her priest more than once (Arlington, VA diocese) and gotten NOWHERE. She really believes in an earlier confirmation but does not (yet) feel comfortable leaving the diocese for confirmation. [On a side note: it is SOOOO frustrating that her dd is old enough to be in 8th grade but she told the truth and said she was homeschooling 7th. He said she had to be in 8th grade.]

Hi Rebecca & Jennifer,
All the information on the Canon Law is in the body of the letter I wrote. I'm cutting & pasting what I wrote as I think it'll be fairly easy to find a link to the law itself.
Here it is:
Upon further investigation, I have also learned that canon 891 of the Code of Canon Law states that the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Latin Rite shall be conferred between the age of discretion and about sixteen years of age, within the limits determined by the diocesan bishop and with regard for the legitimate exceptions given in canon 891. Furthermore, the Code legislates that Sacred Ministers may not deny the Sacraments to those who opportunely ask for them, are properly disposed and are not prohibited by law from receiving them (cf. can. 843 &1).
I also gave our pastor examples of several other children (all homeschooled) who had received their confirmations in our diocese at an earlier than typical age.
btw - we're in the Norwich diocese of Connecticut.

Thank you for the link/sample letter!
Our bishop is very home school friendly, so I don't think that will be an issue nearly as much as whether he is willing to do erly confirmations. I'll have to speak to him about it and see what kind of vibes I get.

This Confirmation thread has a link to the Pheonix bishop's letter on the restored order of the sacraments. It was helpful to me when I talked to my pastor about Confirmation for my 9 yo ds.

Here in our diocese children are Confirmed in grade 2 (7,8yrs) and make their Communion in Grade 3 (8,9yrs). Until recently most children in Australia have made their Confirmation in Grade 6 (11,12 yrs) and this continues to be the practice in many dioceses. REally when you look at it we can receive Confirmation validly as babies, alot of when we do it is cultural.

Martha,
Years ago my mother and her sisters had all the children confirmed in the Byzantine Rite. I know she had been very close to this priest, but if you would like, I could find out more details how she got permission and such. This was a few decades ago...
I prefer going with the Roman Rite, though, since that is what I am. My sister's 3rd daughter received Confession, First communion and Confirmation at age 5 because she was going to undergo serious heart surgery. But they used the above cited Canon Law for the permission.
