Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I could use some help. I am putting together a list of books to sell at a Catholic women's conference that I am helping to plan. Books will include basic theology, apologetics, possibly a few saints, Catholic women's topics (esp. books that reflect JPII's vision of Catholic femininity), Catholic parenting and motherhood, and a few good Catholic novels. I may be forgetting some categories, but you get the picture.

Can you take a moment and give me suggestions on books that you would definitely want to see (either for yourself or for a friend you want to evangelize further) if you were going to a conference like this? Thanks for any help you can give.

Definitely Alice von Hildebrand's The Privilege of Being a Woman. I think Kathryn in the UK suggested this one in December. The Three Kings put it in my stocking -- I'd like to get a copy for every woman I know (as well as the teenaged girls). What a beautiful treatise on womanhood and our position. It's a very easy read too!

I'm sure you've thought of it already, but "Rome Sweet Home" by Scott & Kimberly Hahn is excellent. I keep several "stocked up" to hand out to inquiring minds

Do you have a "humor" category? If so, you might also include the new book, "Please Don't Drink the Holy Water", it's funny, orthodox and subliminally evangelical.

Novels: I'd include Rumer Godden's "In This House of Brede" and Mother Mary Francis' book, "The Right to Be Merry". Also, the much-discussed on our threads and worthwhile, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". It appeals to all faiths, but is a wonderful insight into celebrating the Catholic Liturgical Year.

I agree with the suggestions so far...although I've GOT to read In this House of Brede!

Story of a Soul, autobiography of St. Therese, I Believe in Love by Fr. Jean CJ d'Elbee, Holiness for Housewives by Dom Van Zeller (original title Praying While you Work is more appropriate, as it appeals to both single and married). These three books have been some of my favorite, repeat, spiritual reading, both single and married.

Some Bishop Sheen books, Life of Christ and Three to Get Married.

For JPII's Theology, I'd say Witness to Hope by George Weigel would really fit the bill. A large book, but Weigel really summarizes JPII's teachings well.

Not me, but I wouldn't mind finding it in my stocking

I was going to add one suggestion in the Liturgical Year category: A Continual Feast by Evelyn Vitz. This is enjoyable reading and an idea of how to celebrate simply (and traditionally) the feasts in the home.

This one is invaluable if only becuase I always make the "Mothering Sunday" cake which means I get 2 "Mother's Days" every year

Irene,
I've really enjoyed John Paul the Great. Peggy Noonan gives a very personal account of how JPIIs pontificate brought her into the fullness of the faith. It's a wonderfully feminine book because she writes so compellingly in the voice of a woman of our times.

I always love to plug NFP friendly books so I'm going to suggest Kimberly Hahn's Life Giving Love.

For NFP from an apologist point of view try The Bible and Birth Control by Charles Provan. My husband who is not Catholic found that it helped him understand what is wrong with BC from a protestant standpoint. I love the back cover which says this:

1. What Church Synod issued a Bible commentary which stated that contraception was the same as abortion?

2. What theologian declared in the 1500's that birth control was the murder of future persons?

3. What priest in the 1700's declared that taking "preventative measures" was unnatural and would destroy the souls of those who practiced it?

4. Who declared that birth control was sodomy?

5. What church group ruled in the 1600's that a church official found guilty of birth control was no longer allowed to hold his position?

6. What well known theologian said, "We do not believe in what is termed 'birth control'"?

If you think that the above statements were made by Roman Catholics, then your quiz score is "Zero."

Here's a good saint one: Mothers of the Saints

I hope the conference is a success!

On the parenting side, I loved Danielle Bean's My Cup of Tea.

Although it's not everyone's cup of tea A Mother's Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot might be helpful.

I'm loving The Hidden Power of Kindness right now. Although it's not just for women, it definitely helps to bring about that "meek and quiet" spirit we are supposed to have (not sure where I put mine ).

Here is a list I compiled. I see that some of the suggestions had been posted after I started working on my list - so take those as a second vote.

I listed parenting books that I liked as well as one's that also came from a somewhat different approach but are well-liked by others and are solidly orthodox. On that topic I think there is a wide spectrum and it's best to have the variety.

Parenting and Mothering
Parenting with Grace by Greg & Lisa Popcak
Discipline that Lasts a Lifetime by Ray Guarendi
You’re a Better Parent Than You Think by Ray Guarendi
Mother’s Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot
My Cup of Tea: Musings of a Catholic Mom by Danielle Bean
How to Raise Good Catholic Children by Mary Reed Newland
Talking to Your Child About Being Catholic -misc. contributors
Keeping Your Kids Catholic by Bert Ghezzi
Raise Happy Children…Raise Them Saints!
Raise Happy Children…Teach Them Virtues! Or any of the others by Mary Ann Budnik
Amazing Grace for Mothers by Matt Pinto, Jeff Cavins, Patty Armstrong
Breastfeeding and Catholic Motherhood by Sheila Kippley

Marriage
The Catholic Family Handbook by Lawrence Lovasik
Life-Giving Love: Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage by Kimberly Hahn
Marriage: The Mystery of Faithful Love by Dietrich von Hildebrand
Amazing Grace for Married Couples by Matt Pinto, Jeff Cavins, Patty Armstrong

Apologetics
Catholic for a Reason series edited by Scott Hahn & Leon J. Suprenant (three books)
Catholic Christianity by Peter Kreeft
You Can Understand the Bible by Peter Kreeft
What Catholics Really Believe by Karl Keating
Where is that in the Bible? by Patrick Madrid
Why is that in Tradition? by Patrick Madrid
Surprised by Truth series by Patrick Madrid

Basic Theology
Theology for Beginners by Frank Sheed

Catholic women's topics
Full of Grace: Women and the Abundant Life by Johnette Benkovic
God’s Call to Women edited by Christine Anne Mugridge
--There are several articles and some tapes on the "Feminine Genius" topic and it is obviously part of the Theology of the Body books but as a separate subject of a book it really hasn't been addressed. If you can get an actual copy of Mulieris Dignitatem: On the Dignity and Vocation of Women that would be worthwhile to have. But I was only finding online versions and a few used copies.

Saints
Bedside Book of Saints by Fr. Aloysius Roche
Mystics and Miracles: True Stories of Lives Touched by God by Bert Ghezzi
Married Saints and Blessed by Ferdinand Holbock
The World’s First Love by Fulton J. Sheen

Bible Study/Scripture
Courageous Love: A Bible Study on Holiness for Women by Stacy Mitch
Courageous Virtue: A Bible Study on Moral Excellence for Women by Stacy Mitch
Courageous Women: A Study on the Heroines of Biblical History by Stacy Mitch
Woman of Grace by Michaelann Martin

Misc.
Hidden Power of Kindness by Lawrence G. Lovasik
The Temperament God Gave You by Art and Laraine Bennett

Wow! Thanks to all of you wonderful friends--especially to Mary M. for such a comprehensive list. The "feminine genius" topic was the foundation upon which this annual conference was started.

Elizabeth, I just requested that our county library system purchase John Paul the Great. I saw an article about the book and have wanted to read it.

Amy, I like all your suggestions--they were all on my list too. I am reading through one or two sections of The Hidden Power of Kindness during my meditation time each morning. It is wonderful!

These suggestions will actually help me in two ways. Along with my work in this upcoming conference, I am also working on our parish library. We have only been in our new building a year, so the library is only beginning to take shape. We had a small collection of titles that were previously donated when I began helping with this project last Fall. The donations continue to come in, so we are cataloging and organizing them and I am coming up with "Wish Lists" to print in our bulletin. Those are titles that we would really like to have, whether in used form or to be bought new as a gift to the parish. It's been really fun to work with Catholic books in this way.

If any of you think of any more, I will continue to work on the conference book table list for a few more weeks, so feel free to keep suggesting.

Irene,

Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre De Caussade is one of my yearly reads.

Peace,

Mare
