Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

While attending a Mass served by an elderly priest who I do not know, I was surprised when he inserted his personal comments throughout the Gospel reading, often and at length.

Can someone point me to guidance from the Church on this matter? Thank you!

Love,

Angie, I find the document Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum helpful in these matters.

Below are some particular quotes which may be helpful:

[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.

[61.] In selecting the biblical readings for proclamation in the celebration of Mass, the norms found in the liturgical books are to be followed,[136] so that indeed “a richer table of the word of God will be prepared for the faithful, and the biblical treasures opened up for them”.[137]

[62.] It is also illicit to omit or to substitute the prescribed biblical readings on one’s own initiative, and especially “to substitute other, non-biblical texts for the readings and responsorial Psalm, which contain the word of God”.[138]

Hope this helps!

Thank you for this! I have been watching for a response b/c we ran into this at a church in another diocese while on vacation last year. We didn't get a commentary during the Gospel reading so much as a commentary ON the Gospel in it's place. I thought the priest was giving us an explanation of the Gospel before reading it, but when he proclaimed "The Gospel of the Lord" I thought, "Really? I've never heard it that way before!" He also changed the *necessary* words of consecration so we didn't even get to go to Mass...

Wow, I'm so sorry that you've had this experience. The only time I've experienced "commentary" during the mass was when I attened a special "teaching" mass. The priest explained the origin and symbolism of each step before performing it. So he explained the candles, the sign of the cross, etc. before reading the gospel but like all the other portions of the mass, once it was time to perform the action, he did so without commentary. It was actually a very educational experience even for this lifelong Catholic!

But commentary during the gospel reading?!?! Um, why not just wait until the homily to say your peace?
