Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can someone please tell me which version of the Holy Bible Catholics are meant to use? A couple of the Bibles we have are 'Newly Revised Standard Editions', but all of the thous, thys and shalts are really distracting from comrehending as well. KWIM?

On the same note, we have a 'New Living Translation Life Application Study Bible', that my husband's aunt and uncle gave us as a gift. It's such a nice 'Bible'...soft leather, and they even had out names engraved on it. They are NOT Catholic....I am not sure if they are Protestant (sp?) or what. But anyway....I do love this Bible! All of what Jesus speaks is in red, and there is help with comprehending every passage. But it is so much easier to understand anyway, without the fancy words. So again, my question is....is this (study)Bible acceptable for Catholics?
I really researched this, trying to sort it all out. Fruitless. I would love any help.

Laura, I suggest this article from Catholic Answers about Bible translations. It discusses many different translations and thoughts on what you are using the translation for as to which might be most helpful in regards to a particular use and readibility. I think it is really helpful.

Though we have several different translations, I generally use the Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition (RSV-CE), most commonly found as the Ignatius Bible. The Navarre Bible is the RSV-CE with extra commentary which you might find helpful since you mentioned liking the help with understanding the passages. I find the RSV-CE a very readable Bible - not many thys and thous at all (really only in Psalms).

Here are a couple past threads which discuss Bible translations and preference, which might have some helpful insight for you.

Which bible?

What Bible do you read?

Bible?

EDITED:I see Laura posted the Catholic Answers link, too, while I was composing - we are thinking alike !
