Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just joined a new parish and they have a program for 6 and 7 graders called, The Edge. It is supposed to be confirmation preparation.
Does anyone else know anything about The Edge?
I am considering allowing ds to go for social reasons. He has few friends. It is a church activity. I understand at this age social is very important--and he is so, so lonely. There are good families at this church. It is a wonderful place. The pastor, I am sure, would not steer the kids wrong(other people may and I am aware I am taking a chance, but that is the human issue). I will still do prep at home since we are homeschooling.
I need him to feel connected at church. To have friends. I was thinking this would be good for him. And really, only as a social thing.
Suggestions? Ideas?
I am also hoping he can play CYO football(I am cringing as I don't WANT him to play football-wah!!) in the fall. Maybe that would be better? I think we have the option of not participating in PSR, like The Edge, if we are homeschooling and meet certain criteria.

As far as I understand things, Edge is the middle school component of LifeTeen (we have both at our parish). At my church, it is not Confirmation prep (that is a weekly class plus required service/retreat/LifeTeen familiarization requirements). My daughter (grade 6) attends Edge intermittently...most of the adult leaders are also part of our homeschool co-op, so I know a lot about them and trust them.

If Edge is being presented as prep for Confirmation, I would want to know how it would work, who was in charge and how the real nuts-and-bolts Confirmation catechesis would take place. (At our parish, Edge is not substantial enough, sacramental prep-wise, to be a substitute for weekly or daily catechesis, and it's not meant to be.)

My daughter (11) really enjoys the social aspect of Edge, and I know how the program works because most of the adults involved are homeschool friends. (E.g. they group participants by grade so that 8th graders are not put with 6th graders.) As long as you feel comfortable with the leadership, Edge can be a good middle school Catholic social opp.

As far as being THE Confirmation prep program...that, you'd have to ask about.
