Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking I may add a daily Rosary to my Lenten observances. Is there, historically, a traditional time of day at which the Rosary was/is said or is any time just as good as any other? I know 3 p.m. is the traditional time for the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Anything like that for the Rosary?

Thanks!

Martha

Interesting question? I have never heard of a "time", but I am interested if anyone else has.

I pray the Rosary early in the morning, only because it's when *I* have the time... I have heard of some choosing 3 in the afternoon, connecting it with the Hour of Mercy (but what if you're praying the traditional Rosary and not the Divine Mercy Chaplet)? Hope I'm not just adding more confusion...

Peace,
Nancy

Martha, I believe in medieval times lay people used the rosary as a substitute to praying the Liturgy of the Hours, a poor man's breviary in a way.

See History of the Rosary

Or from Pius Parsch:

Quote:
The Rosary had its origin in the liturgical mentality of former ages. Even at the present time it is called "Mary's Psalter." There still are Catholics who consider the 150 Hail Marys a substitute for the 150 psalms for those persons who neither have the time, the education, nor the opportunity to pray the Hours of the Divine Office. Thus "Mary's Psalter" is a shortened, simplified "breviary" — alongside the common Hour-prayer of the Church.

Perhaps that's the hourly connection with the rosary? Otherwise I haven't heard of anything else. I pray it when I can, and I'm not too dependable unless we do it as a family, which we'll do during Lent after dinner.

I would think just a time of day when you can fully contemplate the mysteries and your intentions... with out little ones? would be more than sufficient as it shows our Lord and Lady your devotion to the contemplation, not just the act at a set time.

Love the rosary!
God bless!
