December 8, Thursday this year. I thought I would attach the news from Rome that this year there is a special plenary indulgence that can be earned this year. As the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United States, this makes it's extra special for the Americans:
PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR SOLEMNITY IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
VATICAN CITY, NOV 29, 2005 (VIS) - According to a decree made public today, Benedict XVI will grant the faithful a Plenary Indulgence for the forthcoming Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 2005). The decree is signed by Cardinal James Francis Stafford and Fr. John Francis Girotti, O.F.M. Conv., respectively penitentiary major and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary.
"December 8," the text reads, "will mark 40 years since Servant of God Paul VI, Supreme Pontiff, who had already proclaimed the Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church, in closing Vatican Council II dedicated great praise to the Virgin who, as Mother of Christ, is Mother of God and spiritual Mother to us all.
"On this Solemnity, the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI, when he renders public homage of praise to Mary Immaculate, has the heartfelt desire that the entire Church should join with him, so that all the faithful, united in the name of the common Mother, become ever stronger in the faith, adhere with greater devotion to Christ, and love their brothers with more fervent charity. From here - as Vatican Council II very wisely taught - arise works of mercy towards the needy, observance of justice, and the defense of and search for peace."
For this reason, the decree continues, the Holy Father "has kindly granted the gift of Plenary Indulgence which may be obtained under the usual conditions (sacramental Confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer in keeping with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff), with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin, on the forthcoming Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, by the faithful if they participate in a sacred function in honor of the Virgin, or at least offer open testimony of Marian devotion before an image of Mary Immaculate exposed for public veneration, adding the recitation of the Our Father and of the Creed, and some invocation to the Virgin."
The document concludes by recalling that faithful who "through illness or other just cause," are unable to participate in a public ceremony or to venerate an image of the Virgin, "may obtain a Plenary Indulgence in their own homes, or wherever they may be, if, with the soul completely removed from any form of sin, and with the intention of observing the aforesaid conditions as soon as possible, they unite themselves in spirit and in desire to the Supreme Pontiff's intentions in prayer to Mary Immaculate, and recite the Our Father and the Creed."

Just got this week's copy of the National Catholic Register. A front page article points out that Nov. 27 was the 175th anniversary of the Miraculous Medal. It's a great article. I wish I had known this on Sunday, but we can focus on this anniversary celebration this whole year. It is especially fitting to tie this in with this year's celebration of the Immacualte Conception since our Blessed Mother asked St. Catherine to spread the devotion to her Immaculate COnception, many years before the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was declared. The medal was originally referred to as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception.

The Register article included a story about Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. According to Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, the postulator of the cause for canonization, she used to hand the medals out to everyone, from devout Catholics to those with no religion. She would tell everyone to "Pray to Our Lady - here is a Miracualous Medal." When for example, women told Blessed Teresa they were having difficulty getting pregnant, she'd answer, "Here is a Miraculous Medal. You pray." And Mother Teresa's prayer was very simple and direct: "Mary Mother of Jesus, give us a child." Many women soon found themselves happy mothers.
What a beautiful witness.
As far as our family's traditions - since we decorate the tree with symbols to correspond with the Feast days and Saints each day in Advent, we put white glass ornaments on the tree on this day.

Your timing of this couldn't be better! The example is very appropro for us....and we'll take it to heart this Christmas. Dh was just saying we are going to do the Immaculate Conception Novena from the Handbook of Prayers and our special intention is for another child. To bring the Miraculous Medal into this is so neat!
Now my big question, does the novena end on the feast day, so that's the ninth day, or end on the 7th as the 9th day?

We'll be celebrating by going to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.DH will be producing Mass for EWTN. Anybody in the DC/MD/VA area want to meet there?

The schedule is long...what Mass are you attending? It just might work. I could meet my dh for Mass as a family. A little pilgrimage!

We're supposed to have a White House tour that morning. I have no idea how long that takes, but I was thinking of trying to do Mass in DC instead of dragging everyone back here and then out again in the evening.

Lots of families in our HS group are going to the shrine for noon mass and I'm trying to talk dh into it but he's not sure who will load up the Christmas trees for the customers that day (our farm life is rapidly turning into our "farm market" life!  ) Not quite brave enough to take the chickies so far off the farm by myself. Looks like I'll be watching it with the rest of EWTN's audience before going to mass that evening. I hear the Shrine is so beautiful...

Elizabeth, I hope your family has recovered enough to go to the Shrine on Thursday. We are fighting different illnesses with ds...he's still under the weather, so I don't want to take him out for a long hard day. I sound like a worried mother, but he's just not himself since he had a stomach virus last week. Plus, my Advent retreat is getting very close and I'm not prepared!

Jenn,
we're still up in the air. Today was much better.Stephen and Nicholas even went out to play for awhile. Christian and Patrick are still sluggish. Katie had first, over a week ago. But Michael still hasn't had it. So, if he's up all night Wednesday night or if he's sick Thursday, I'll probably stay home. Otherwise, I plan to go.
I'm sorry you won't be able to make. I was looking forward to seeing you!

I plan on going to Mass on Thursday as it is a Holy Day, but I've never thought about trying to fulfill the requirements for an indulgence. A few questions-
Does confession have to take place before the Mass? On the same day? I don't think I'll be able to get to confession before Saturday afternoon. Also, what does this phrase mean?with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin

To gain the indulgence just go to Confession within a week of the holy day. Remember to pray for the Pope on the day of the indulgence as well as fulfill the special conditions (in this case the prayer before the statue of the BVM). Then, when you go to Confession be resolved to break your attachments to venial sins (assuming you are free of attachments to mortal sins) in the future.

Also, not to discourage anyone from trying to gain this indulgence, but you can also receive them for praying the rosary or for going to adoration among other things. Look up the specifics for each one, but there are lots of ways to gain this special gift of mercy.
I was trying to make the noon mass at the shrine, but without running the kids from the White House to the metro to etc, I don't see it working. I think we'll have a leisurely tour and then drag ourselves out for mass in the evening.

Confession can be 8 days before or after the potential plenary indulgence was earned.
Not to sound discouraging, but I have heard that it is very hard to get rid of the "attachment to sin." I can have the resolve to avoid and change my life, but is that really detachment? These are the little things, the venial that creep into my life.

Yes, the Church is quite generous...but it's always nice to have a SPECIAL one attributed to that day.
The Enchiridion of Indulgences is the easy-to-read-official-Church-document on indulgences. Here you will find specific directions on how to gain indulgences, and specific prayers and acts that gain partial or plenary indulgences.

I think it's a good decision. That hill from Catholic U/Brookland up to the Shrine is a KILLLER!  To be walking the kids up in the cold is no fun for a holy day!

I'm glad to hear it!  How do your children get their energy back up after a stomach virus? Even though it only lasts "24 hours" I find it takes another day or two to get my sea legs back...as does the rest of my family.
