Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is that what they are called - the groups for lay people affialiated to/connected with the religious orders?

I'd like to join one. I think it would help me in holiness, give some structure/accountability and help me with finding a community to serve among.

But I am guessing that apart from finding which ones are active in my area, I would need to discern which strands of spirituality are more "my thing" or more what I need.

Has anyone any tips on how to go about this? And how has it helped you, or have there been problems fitting it in alongside home educating and being a wife and mother?

We hoping to be received at Portsmouth Abbey nearby (benedictines)...

I would explore what your individual charism is, or your family's charism. From there, you can find nearby communities that suit you.

I would look up phrases like "oblate", "third order"...

You already know about benedictines, franciscans (guidelines for oblates or tertiaries are listed on publicly accessible websites), cisterscians have lay members, missionaries of charity have lay members, paulists have lay members. I suspect that most every order has a tertiary component. There are also other movements you could check out such as Regnum Christi or Opus Dei... Check into individual orders by googling them and see if there are links from there for lay members.

Living according to a monastic rule (modified for real family life, of course) is very, very beneficial to our family. It really grounds us and helps set priorities. I think it has been a perfect fit for a family-centered home!

You have my prayers for your discernment!

Blessings,
