I saw this in a catalogue today. Does anyone have it and if so, do you like it?
Also, when we were protestant, it was very common for folks to use a concordance. Do Catholics use these too, and if so, can anyone recommend one?

That is so weird. It didn't work for me when I tried it again. So I went back to Amazon and I got the same url.
Well, the book is called Bible for Young Catholics by Eileen Heffernan et al. I saw it first in the Catholic Child catalogue.
I've never seen it before, but it looks interesting to me.

Well, I looked up the Bible for Young Catholics (does this work?) and I don't know a thing about it!  It looks great, I'd also love to hear if anyone has first hand experience with it. My son (now 10) has read The Picture Bible over and over again and I would like another kid-friendly, inviting version for him. (He once showed me that the same exact character was drawn in the Old and New Testaments!)
As for the Concordance, Catholics definitely can use one for Bible study. I have just started looking into getting one and ideally you want one to match your translation. That said, I read a good review for the A Textual Concordance of Holy Scripture which is not the translation I usually use.
I know study Bibles often have a partial concordance in the back, but I have only found an NAB study Bible (I prefer the RSV vs. the gender-neutral NAB).

That's it. I wish I could search inside on the Amazon site, but its not an option for this book. I can't really tell at what age a child could read this on his or her own.
I also own My First Catholic Bible, which sounds like a bible for preschoolers, but its actually upper elementary. Its a great bible and I recommend it all the time. But this one seems to have more details at the beginning of each book about who wrote it and the overall emphasis. That is what caught my attention. If its orthodox, then this sounds great to me.
Thanks for the link for the concordance. I presume this links to the Douay Rheims? I'd love an RSV concordance, too. I've never seen one in catalogues before. At least I know they exist now!

Well, I actually saw the Bible for Young Catholics in person today but only for about 2 minutes. I'm not sure about it yet. I am NOT a Bible scholar (just a novice student) but when it stated that Solomon did NOT write the Song of Songs I didn't know what to think. Anyway, I will try to get a longer/better look at it tomorrow. I did find a sample page online at Pauline Books

Well, I looked at the commentary in two of our bibles (NAB...not my favorite but commonly used) and the NIV (protestant and very Evangelical...its the bible I used before we converted) and both of them said that the authorship of Song of Songs is not clear. My copy of the RSV has no introductory commentary. Bummer...
I like the sample page a lot. It looks a bit easier to understand than My First Catholic Bible. Also, I like how it tells the reader who was speaking in the book.
My First Catholic Bible compiles the story in a narrative form so that you don't always notice when you've moved to a new book of the Bible.
Its a long drive to the nearest Catholic bookstore for me, but I'm tempted to see if they have it and take a closer look...

I almost forgot. If you get a look at it tomorrow, will you check and see if the Deuterocanonicals are represented? This is something I am always looking for because a lot of children's bibles skip over them. My First Catholic Bible has the story of Judith in it, but because its a narrative format, I don't know if my ds (who was raised on prot. bible stories) even noticed it was a new story or that it was a book he'd never read before ! LOL

We own "Bible for Young Catholics" and, yes, it does include the deuterocanonicals.
What I really love about this Bible is that it's a great transitional bible for the middle school ages. It's not too simplistic like those early bibles but it also doesn't go into all the explicit (sexual) details that my children are too young to be exposed to at this point. It has 2 maps (which I find very helpful) on the inside covers.
All of my school-age children (6-11) are able to easily follow with the story. I found the "Golden Children's Bible" to be more difficult for them to understand.

I took another quick look at it today (at our church book fair). It intrigues me and Brenda's recommendation does too. I mostly read the intros and I will say one thing -- they are stated as fact instead of questions. Solomon did not write the Song of Songs, John did NOT write the Gospel of John, etc. I know it is a young person's Bible, but I wish it would state these things at least as probablities. That said, you could just tell your young reader that the scholarship isn't that cut and dry. I think it bothers me most because I am looking for the perfect study Bible for myself and have yet to find it.

What? The Gospel of John wasn't written by John? That sounds more fishy to me...sigh...I guess I'm going to have to see it, first. Thanks for the head's up.

I just wanted to recommend a resource that I've been reading as I read this Bible to the kids. It's
Peter Kreeft's You Can Understand the Bible. Since I'm learning right along with them I wanted to have a resource that I could turn to when questions arise.

Wow Jen!
I think you'll like it! He explains the "theories" about the author of St. John's gospel. I haven't found a Peter Kreeft book that I didn't like & that I didn't learn alot from.

You are too funny!
He actually says that it is most likely that the Gospel of St. John was written by St. John. If you've read Kreeft, you know that he is incredibly logical & loves to put forth arguments as to why something is the way he is.

We have the Bible for Young Catholics and I really like it. My dd read it from cover to cover when she was 8 years old and she really loved it. I have used it often when I need to read a bible story for children that is written clearly, concisely and well but is not watered down...
The Bible is published by the Daughters of St. Paul and I love them!  They have such great books for kids....
Oh, and I agree with Peter Kreeft about the gospel of John!
