Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there anyone who has this book that can tell me if there are many scripture verses included throughout the text?

I ran across a book called "The Gentle Art of Hospitality" which I almost bought. It had great ideas and had scripture intertwined throughout. Then I thought of "Tea and Cake With the Saints" and would prefer to have that if it also includes the scripture.

I have both books.

Alice quotes from Scriptures twice in "Tea and Cake With the Saints", but she also quotes heavily from poetry and living books that are particularly applicable to the entry. She quotes a good bit from Eight Cousins, Anne of Green Gables, etc. She invokes two saints that I can remember - St. Martha and St. Francis de Sales - there may be a couple more...just remembering off the top of my head.

In "The Gentle Art of Hospitality" there are a few quotes from Scripture, but also many more quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt, Goethe, Mother Teresa, and many other people.

I think both books are lovely. If you're trying to offer something for your daughter in the gentle art of homemaking, I prefer and heartily recommend you purchase Alice's book, which sadly seems unavailable right now. I couldn't find it anywhere. If your budget allows, I'd get both.

If you're interested, I've been pulling together a bit of a unit study with recommended books for young ladies in the domestic arts. St. Martha's Apron Strings is really based entirely on Alice's "Tea and Cake with the Saints."

HTH a little Diana! Good luck with your decision, and let me know if you're looking for other specifics on the books!

Jennifer,

Thankyou for your thoughtful response. I am leaning more toward Tea and Cake With The Saints as I do prefer a Catholic resource. (I really did like the scripture references that I saw in "The Gentle Art..." though).

I looked last week on the CHC website and "Tea and Cake" was out of stock, but it is in stock now. Also, their sample page shows a scripture verse from Peter. I'm off to place my order! Thanks for your help and the wealth of info you included in your link. I think my daughter and I are going to thoroughly enjoy practicing the art of hospitality. :)
