Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope this isn't too OT -- just looking for advice.

There's a talk scheduled at our church for November. It's organised by the Newman Society and is entitled 'The Legacy of Humanae Vitae'. The speaker is a member of 'Catholics for a Changing Church' which set the alarm bells ringing for me, so I googled it and was utterly horrified. This organisation was *set up* as a protest against HV and have all sorts of predictably dodgy views on homos*xuality, g*y adoption, women priests as well as contraception.

I am horrified that there's a talk by one of their speakers, at a church group, in the church building, and that innocent people could potentially go to the meeting and hear heresy.

Dh and I are planning to go and heckle, ahem, raise reasoned objections, but I'm also thinking that it just should not be allowed in the first place. Should we write to the Abbot (it's an abbey church) and/or the Bishop (who in our case is the Cardinal)?

I think you should write to them.. perhaps the person who ok'd it didn't have all the information they should have had.. after all it doesn't really sound bad.. until you find out more.

Yes, you need to go to whomever heads your church with the information you researched, and your concerns. That is your first step. After that, if you get no satisfaction, you need to go to the Bishop next.

I'm sorry this is happening in your church.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, too. I would definitely contact folks on up the chain, so to speak. So many people could be misled by this...

Elizabeth--I would write to anyone and everyone you can and raise objections insistently and loudly...but maybe that's just me ! Write the abbott, the cardinal, the leader of the group that invited the speaker, and contact as many fellow parishioners as you can to get the word aout about what this really is.

I second what everyone else here has said... Absolutely, run your concerns past the priest and then up the chain as necessary. This really needs to be addressed so as to avoid leading folks astray.

Elizabeth, I agree with what everyone has said. Just remember, if you do confront, to do it with charity (as I am sure you will). We are having a simular problem with a priest recommending visionaries in his homily that are ... shall we say, not really approved by the church. This is distressing for us, but as I said, we feel we have to wait for the correct timing in approaching him. We really like this priest, but are concerned about him mentioning these visionaries.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this.

Ohhh I have red flags here. This does not sound like something coming from God. I am so sorry. I agree... write letters and pray to the Holy Spirit to give you the words in your letters that will touch all who read them. I will pray about constantly for you! Please keep us posted, esp when Nov approaches.

Elizabeth, you should definitely write, but given the Cardinal's support for CAFOD, which is notorious for being less than orthodox on some of these issues (Fr. Tim Finigan's blog post here give some background) I wouldn't be optimistic that you will get anywhere. If any reply you get from the Cardinal is unsatisfactory, then write directly to the papal office in Rome. The Cardinal is retiring and an announcement of his successor should be made soon. From reading Damian Thompson's Telegraph blog, it sounds as though the Pope has his eye quite closely on the English Church, so no letter is wasted. We have to hope for better next time around!

You may have better luck with the abbot. I hope.

A happy update. I bumped into the parish priest while on an errand in the parish office (you know, one of those 'coincidences' when you know God is putting you in a place!). I let him know that I was extremely unhappy, indeed scandalised, about the talk -- it wasn't about my opinion, it was about following the teaching of the Church. He obviously felt the same, but was in an awkward position as the programme had already been circulated without being shown to him first.

That was several weeks ago. I don't know what's gone on behind the scenes in the meantime, but we received a revised programme today -- and the offending talk has been removed completely.

Praise the Lord!

An amazing update... We've received a new programme from the organisation which planned the original, offensive talk.

There's now a talk scheduled on Humanae Vitae by a man who is a professor of Bioethics at a Catholic college. As far as I know, he's *very* orthodox. In fact, although he's no longer practising as a priest , he preached at our wedding (but we lost touch after he left the priesthood).

God works in mysterious ways!
