Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone seen The Island? It sounds fascinating and the still photos look beautiful.

It has won a ton of awards including 5 Russian Oscars and they released it to Russian TV on Jan. 7, Orthodox Christmas. The Orthodox Church has embraced and blessed the film even to the point of priests and bishops literally standing outside theaters praying. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine.

Anyone seen it yet?

It looks neat, but I have not seen it. I did notice it is available to "watch instantly" on Netflix, as well as for normal rental.

I ended up watching The Island a week or so ago...some random thoughts today now that I've found this thread again :

Fabulously filmed movie, very lovely in rather the manner of Into Great Silence with the sweeping views and allowing people to be quiet while praying or walking without a surge of background music or chat-chat-chat going on. It is subtitled, fyi.

I think one of the strongest points of the movie is its pro-life message, early in the film a woman comes to Father Anatoli to ask for his blessing for an abortion. I wish I could find an English cut and paste of his response. I skipped back and watched that part several times, it was so incredible but I can't find it online in English now. Basically, he tells her there is no blessing for murder, and to go home and love her little boy.

The Prayer - Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner - occurs continually throughout the movie.

The actor who played the main character, Father Anatoli, gave a great acceptance speech for his Golden Eagle (like an Oscar, I guess) wherein he told Russian Women to go make babies which is such a shocking concept that he was yanked off the air by the programmers.

It made me think of Tomi dePaola's Clown of God in some parts. Anatoli is not a wise prophet figure, rather a foolish sort of figure, one of those people where that old saying - out of the mouths of babes and fools comes truth - applies.

I liked it, I found The Island very thought-provoking, but I wish we'd broken it up over two nights as we did with Into the Great Silence. Anybody else watched it yet? What did you think?

We've watched the first half (we can't seem to watch anything in one sitting). I really am enjoying it. I think the Lord Have Mercy parts are really nice...
This is not a movie for kids with the forced murder in the beginning. But my hubby is willing to watch it with me (and for some reason he won't watch romantic movies with me?)

A full review to follow...
