I haven't actually done it, and I don't havea ny on hand myself atm (I gave them away since I never needed them), but I always thought that some brands of disposable nursing pads looked remarkably like the large hosts for consecration.

Michael's and AC Moore sell little circle wooden parts that you can paint. That's what we use.

We use cut out circles of white construction paper.

Yet ANOTHER use for nursing pads!!! And, I thought "baby pillows" was creative.

No, no, no......HOSTS tops BABY PILLOWS by a mile!

We use white construction paper as well.

because my brother is a priest, my mom subscribes to Leaflet catalog - they sell "blacks" and collars and things like that she gets him for Christmas presents. The catalog is full of pictures of all the things you'll find in a Catholic church, including hosts - I cut one out and glued it to posterboard. Also made flashcards of many other items.

In my CGS training, the Altar work was presented WITHOUT a host at all. Similarly, the tabernacle has an empty ciborium. Maybe someone here can remind me why :-)

My priest said that when he was a kid, they did "play Mass" using Necco Wafers...

I don't remember given a reason, but the purpose of the Mass presentations are to recognize and name the vessels and articles used for Mass, but not really an imitation of Mass. It's a teaching tool and important to not digress into play. Also I see the important to distinguish the Mass from the miniature items.

You'll notice in Maria Montessori's original plan (posed in "The Child in the Church" I think) she uses child-size vestments. The shift in CGS went to miniature vestments that can't be worn.

That doesn't mean that Mass will not be reinacted by the children. I allow reverent imitation. It's amazing how accurate they are in the little details of the Mass.

And in the atrium I've trained under they use real wine in the cruets!

Oh yeah neccos- that was my favorite when i was little

We dont use a "host" either the dc re-inact anyway.
ds is very seious holding up his paten
"bwaahdy of cwist" he shakes his finger in your face and Ahemms" you if you dont say Amen fast enough.

I didnt bother with mini vestements as the dc had already ransacked the dress-ups

I agree that reverent reinactment is different than play- if it gets goofy I just remove the work.

Hands down, Necco Wafers. That way they can eat them.

I also remember my brother and I cutting out hosts from bread slices. Oh, the memories of childhood.

I remember practicing for 1st Communion in my 2nd grade CCD class. My CCD teacher brought some 4Real "unblessed" wafers to class and we got in a line and received one.

Our First communion class uses real host breads that are "unblessed" too.

When we were preparing Rachel for first communion at home our DRE gave me half a dozen or so to let her try them at home so we could be sure there would be no sensory issues on the "big day".

We use the mini rice crackers from Trader Joe's.

Not being of the Montessori bent, I have no issues with reverent play with the mass kit.

The reason the "pretend host" is needed is for Level II work on the Mass. The prayers for the epiclesis and offering are taught and demonstrated, as well as the breaking of the bread (i.e., the "pretend host") and some of the other major prayers that are part of the Eucharistic Prayer. The reason for the cut out construction paper circles is for the breaking of the bread. They are usually 2-3 inches in diameter. When the real host would be broken into 2 large pieces at Mass, the pretend host is torn in half. So, the pretend host is not used for nomenclature, as models of the chalice and paten are used in the Level I Altar work (where the children are also taught nomenclature that includes the tabernacle and ciborium, but of course there are no reserved consecrated hosts in the model ciborium).

Eventually, all of these individual prayers and gestures are learned in their proper order and relationship to one another in a work called "The Synthesis of the Mass," which is done before the children begin the the meditations and missal work that are part of Sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
