My pastor has given us permission to prepare dd for confirmation at home (she starts Grade 7 next year) - part of the reason is because we will be using Seton religion (and Seton is approved by our diocese as a Catholic school)
I have a provisional plan - see below. Please share your ideas

Marilyn,
We're such kindred spirits.  Your list looks very similar to mine for next year. S. is very excited to begin preparing for this Sacrament!
We will be doing an in depth study of virtues using The Catholic Girls Guide by Father Lasance. I'm using Image of God 7 for the first half of the year, and Faith and Life 7 for the second half of the year.
I also got The Sacrament of Confirmation For Confirmation Candidates.
I am using A Philadelphia Catholic in King James' Court and the accompanying study guide as an apologetics course. I'm not sure if we will start this for her 7th grade year or save it for 8th grade yet. I want to pre-read this one. It gets quite good reviews, but I'm concerned about some of the content after talking with other mothers. Here is a really helpful review.
We are going back to the beginning in our study of History, so that will figure in as well with early Church history.
I am going to address some of the morality issues more next year. My goal this year is to lay a strong foundation in the virtues.

I just finished this today and loved every page! I can't believe how much I have learned! My plan for my rising 7th grader is to work through Elizabeth's list of Confirmation recommendations, pre-reading each one.
The only thing that I would consider at all iffy is a conversation at the very end where a well-intentioned uncle tries to give a little birds-and-the-bees advice to the main character, Michael. There is one sentence that references birth control, one where Michael slams Planned Parenthood and another sentence where Michael tells his uncle that the Church teaches that s*x is a grave sin. That's about it. That part of the book comprises about 2 pages and it is in the epilogue. You could easily skip it. Just be sure to read the final section of the epilogue!!

I have read all of you suggestions and I like them! LOL!!!
What I just wanted to mention is that I went ahead and bought CHCs Middle School Lesson plans, not so much for the plans, but for two of the study guides and a few other things. One thing that I really, really like and plan to go over with my son is the Virtue Tree recommended for the 7th grade. Each virtue is given 2 pages and there are questions to think about and discuss, and Bible verses to read. I just thought I would mention it since Jennifer mentioned virtues.

Thank you so much for posting your review of the book. That is exactly what I had heard, but I'm encouraged to think I could maybe just omit a couple of pages at the end with no real effect on the book as a whole. I'm still hoping to read it over the summer.
I did want to come back to this thread and mention that my plan to use Image of God 7 may not work out. Kristen and I were talking about it this weekend IRL and had come to the same basic conclusions. I read through the entire text and I'm concerned it will be TMI for my dd. I have plenty of other wonderful resources though so I don't think her formation will be lacking without it. Still praying about it...but I did want to red flag it since I posted above that I would be using it.
Thanks again for the review of the book, Molly. I feel better about keeping it in the lineup!

Thanks for the information. I was planning on using Seton Religion - I am going to check it out on Friday. I have decided not to use any of the books that I had in the Virtues section of my plan as it would be TMI for my dd. I am going to use the Catholic Girl's Guide that Jen recommended and maybe Beautiful Girlhood - and together with out Home Ec program and focus on hospitality etc this should be sufficient'

v Great Bible Adventure (Jeff Cavins; making of a salvation history timeline).
v The Bronze Bow (historical setting of Jesus’ time).
v Greek and Roman history and the founding of Christendom; Latin language (preparation of pagan culture for the Incarnation; history of the early Church; language of the Church).
v Chief Truths of the Faith (Fr. John Laux; creation, original sin, Christ, faith, grace, eternal life, etc.).

Hi everyone,
I have been following this thread myself as I am in my second year of planning my oldest daughter's confirmation preparation. She will be in eight grade this year and will hopefully receive the sacrament in the spring at our home parish--even though we are not participating in the parish program.
I noticed that almost everyone has this title listed to use but has anyone actually used it yet? I would like a review by someone who has already read it or used it with their child, if possible!
Anyone?

Abby and I have read this. Please let me know what specific questions you have. The first section is in "Q and A format - easy to read with illustrations. Factual, combination of catechism and Scripture. The second section is little bios of martyrs and saints (Witnesses for the Faith)

Thanks, Marilyn. I went ahead and bought it from Hillside. It sounds as if it will be a good resource for us to read together and discuss. I like that it appears to be concise (only 107 pages)--this makes it much more appealing to me!

Erin,
This isn't a super engaging book. We used it very little in actual preparation. It was spread out over several weeks to read, but by the time we got through it we found it was really redundant with the other books we had. Because of that, I moved this book along to another family after preparing my second confirmand because we had another dry/factual type book for preparation and I didn't need two. If you don't have a lot of other books for preparation, this could be useful as your "just the facts" overview kind of book, but I just wanted to let you know that it is rather dry, and not very engaging, and might be redundant if you already have something like that.
As far as your question, your 12 yo would be a good fit for this book. For the 9yo it would depend - I've had a 9 yo that could have taken it on just fine, one that would have needed a little more hand holding and explanation with this book, and another that it would have been way over that child's head.
I have to be brief now because the baby needs me...but adding quickly the two books we've relied on for the last two for Confirmation prep:
We have a simple Q&A Sacrament of Confirmation book: Preparation for Confirmation that we use that fills the *just the facts* needs for this part of preparation for the Sacrament.
And I really like a book that St. Augustine Academy Press reprinted that works really well for this Sacrament:The Soldier of Christ: Talks Before Confirmation by Mother Mary Loyola. Works well read before, during and after the formal preparation for this Sacrament.
Hope this helps in your decision making process!

Agh...typing hastily....I should note that this book is very thorough and I really like that - however, its preparation does contain some information that is appropriate to the traditional rite of Confirmation, which is almost identical to the new form, but does have a couple of differences worth noting. The primary exception is that in actual confirmation ceremony of the current form, the confirmand is not (lightly) struck on the cheek by the Bishop, and in the confirmation ceremony of the traditional form, the confirmand IS struck lightly on the cheek as a physical reminder that the child is now a soldier of Christ and should be prepared to endure pain, even martyrdom if necessary, in defending the faith.
Anyway, wanted to make sure that is clear. The other questions/answers are wonderful and in depth for preparation and explaining the effects of the Sacrament and are good jumping off points for the rest of preparation. The style of the book is very much like the Baltimore Catechism in Q&A format.

I shouldn't have said "new," Jodie; that term can be misleading. I was typing quickly and should have been more clear!
When I said "new" it was in relation to the older form, sometimes called traditional, but more accurately called the "Extraordinary Form." The "new" form is actually the current form...it's just new relatively speaking.
If your parish follows the current, or Ordinary (Novus Ordo) Form and liturgical books, then the Bishop does not slap or strike the candidate as part of conferring the Sacrament Confirmation.
If your parish follows the 1962 liturgical books, then the Bishop will gently strike or slap the Confirmation candidate as part of Confirmation.
