Have any of you made rosary boxes like the stations of the cross boxes? We've had our stations box for a few years now and my friends are now asking for a rosary box. Any ideas? We may make some as a service project for the parish ccd classes.-

No, I haven't. I've been trying to brainstorm on this, actually. I made a stations box for ds and he's been asking for a rosary one.

I hadn't thought of a Rosary Box, but it is a great idea. Let's brainstorm here ... off the top of my head ...

JOYFUL MYSTERIES
Annunciation - small angel (I would use the one in the Playmobil nativity set)

Visitation - ??

Nativity - baby Jesus, in crib if possible (again, I would use the Playmobil nativity one)

Presentation - dove or bird of some sort (if necessary, a chicken from a set of farm animals would do)

Finding in the Temple - small scroll (to represent the scrolls read in the Temple. Easily made with two matchsticks and a strip of paper.)

LUMINOUS MYSTERIES

Baptism - tiny bottle of water or a shell (can be used for pouring water at a baptism, I think)

Miracle at Cana - grapes (toy food!)

Preaching of the Kingdom - ??

Transfiguration - sun (model or picture), or any miniature light (maybe one of those tiny keyring torches?)

Institution of the Eucharist - I'm thinking crackers to represent unleavened bread, but how to prevent crumbs?

SORROWFUL MYSTERIES

Agony in the Garden - small sword (for cutting off the high priest's ear? Playmobil again!)

Scourging at the Pillar - whip (string tied to a small stick would do)

Crowning with Thorns - make a tiny crown of thorns, or just use a thorny twig from a rose bush

Carrying of the Cross - a small cross

Crucifixion - a small crucifix

GLORIOUS MYSTERIES

Resurrection - a small empty box to represent the empty tomb

Ascension - cotton ball (= cloud)

Descent of the Holy Spirit - dove (again!), picture of fire, or a small candle to represent fire?

Assumption - ??

Coronation of Mary - crown

Any ideas to fill in those gaps? Or more ideas to add to mine - the more choices the better, as it would make it easier to get everything together.

Although I hadn't thought of a Rosary Box I've been working on similar lines as I've been putting together a set of cards and ideas for a Way of Light (Stations of the Resurrection) Box as a follow up for our Stations of the Cross Box. I'm almost done, and hope to post something about it in the next day or two.

This mystery is very broad and abstract. It is linked heavily to the idea of conversion and repentence - so possibly a prayer card with the Act of Contrition on it.

I think they have plastic crackers in the toy foods. Also you can shelac (sp?) food to preserve it.

The readings from the Apostolic Letter point to confession and repentence. How about a purple cloth cut in the shape of a minature stole that a priest wears to hear confession?

How about a small chalice and paten? They could be made from sculpey clay, or aluminum foil.

How about a miniature kite to remind of the rushing wind? Playmobil has a few versions of play fire that would work, too.

Since I switched out the empty box, how about a small empty box for here? Or something to remind of "the heavens", like a star? The star could also be used for Coronation, with the Biblical quote (moon at her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars).

Another idea for the Annunciation: a packet of Marigold seeds. Last year we took someone's advice from this board and planted marigolds on the feast of the Annunciation, since the Holy Spirit planted a seed in Mary's womb. This focuses the attention on the Incarnation of Jesus.

And, Institution of the Eucharist: small chalice
For our Mass kit we have used the small "wine glasses" that are sold 4 to a pack in the wedding section of the dollar tree. We use white poker chips with a cross drawn on for the Body of Christ but I have a friend that uses white foam board cut into a circle which is probably less sacrilegious than poker chips

But at least there are no crumbs...

Thanks again, Kathryn! I'm so excited about this. My big decisions now, should I make smaller individual boxes for each group of mysteries that will fit in a larger, to keep them separated? Decisions, decisions....
