Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

There is an annual guidebook published by the Catholic Book Publishing Company which lays out exactly which pages to use for each of the Hours.

http://www.catholicbookpublishing.com/ShowProduct.aspx?Produ ctID=310&DepartmentID=11

It's only $2.00. You should be able to find it at a local Catholic bookstore, or you can order it off this link.

Hi Margaret
Here's an older post about the breviary:
Liturgy of the Hours

You'll find some basic instructions there.

(Happy New Year!)

Helen

Dh and I are going to be starting the Liturgy of the Hours. I was going to get the Shorter Book of Christian Prayer and a guide. Is the shorter book easy to figure out?

Hi Marilyn,
Honestly, I get a little confused with the different names applied to the different versions of the breviary. To me the "shorter" version means basically "psalms only" - is this correct?

I'm not familiar with this version.

The one volume Christian prayer (the condensed one volume as opposed to the four volume set), for many, is difficult to decipher without praying it with someone familiar with the layout. It can be done. There are directions. But, I think the rhythm (the daily layout) is not as obvious in the one volume version.

Let's see if there is someone else more familiar with the "shorter" version.

The shorter book is much easier. Bottom line though, you can get a Guide for both the complete set and the shorter book... and you would be good to go. $2 and it even gives you page numbers.

I bought the Lent section of the complete set, and I have to say I much prefer my one volume Christian prayer book (which has served me well for 20 years) and thus, have decided not to spend my money on the other 3 sections of the complete set.

I'm not sure, Helen, what you mean by 'psalms only'.. The one volume I have (which has "Christian Prayer" on the cover) has everything in it for daily prayer, all 4 weeks, plus all the feastdays and seasons (Advent, etc). It has the commons (BVM, etc) and even has music (with notes). And a selection of Office of the Readings, Daytime Prayer, Nightime Prayer... All in sections. I keep a ribbon in the 4 week spread and that's where you start out for the most part.

I have not found the one volume difficult to decipher at all. In fact, I think it's easier. There is a thread from last year where people wrote a lot about how to prayer the Liturgy of the Hours. I think the best bet is for you to do a search --- unless someone knows how to do a link to it. I don't know how to do that, sorry!

Another suggestion is to google Liturgy of the Hours...I know there is a website that gives a great detailed overview of the Liturgy of the Hours, section by section. I wish I could remember what it was! If I do, I will write another post!

There is one book called
"Christian Prayer."

This is the one volume version of the four. From your description, this is the book you have.

Then there is
"Shorter Christian Prayer"

An acquaintance had this book and it only contained the psalmody. (This is what I saw once.)

This is why there can be confusion in discussing the different types of breviaries.

Marilyn began by asking about
"Shorter"

so, I'm wondering if her book is only the psalmody or if she meant the one volume "Christian Prayer" that you like.

How funny this comes up! I was inspired by Elizabeth's post and started doing the Office while nursing, since I know I'll be seated at certain times of the day. I was going to do a blog post, but now I'll just throw some things in here.

The Liturgy of the Hours is also referred to as the breviary or Christian Prayer or Divine Office. There are several hours prayed during the day, Morning, Daytime (which includes Midmorning, Midday, and Midafternoon), Evening, and then Night Prayers. There is also the Office of Readings. Only cloistered religious are required to pray all the hours. The basic and most important ones are Morning and Evening Prayer. These are usually the daily requirement for religious, the rest is "bonus".

The "Shorter Christian Prayer" only has the Morning and Evening Prayer for the Liturgy of the Hours. I'm not sure if it has any seasonal prayers for the Liturgical Year.

Christian Prayer is a one volume which has all the 4 weeks, some Daytime and Night Prayer, some Office of Readings.

There is a 4 volume set done by seasons.

The difference of the last two is all the hours are included for each week psalmodies and the calendar in the 4 volume, whereas the 1 volume the evening and morning prayer are put together in the psalmody and calendar section, but the other hours are in other parts of the volume.

I've been blessed to find used copies of the 4 volume and I really really like it over the 1 volume, but both are easy to use after you learn the basics. And the instructions on HOW to say the hours are in the books, and very easy to follow along. You can also read General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours which is the Church's document on the prayer. Here's some layman instructions.

The Liturgy of the Hours is broken down into a 4 week Psalter, or collection of Psalms and Canticles. There are sites that have the hours printed online, or you can download a file or print for each day, such as http://www.universalis.com/

http://www.liturgyhours.org/

http://www.ebreviary.com/

The hardest thing to do is to find where to start or "pick up" in the weeks when you're praying the hours. I finally, FINALLY found a site that lists the Psalter Week for the calendar. I always wanted Catholic Culture or my Catholic Calendar to include the mass readings and the Divine Office Week. This site http://www.churchyear.net/calendar2008.html. There's a free .pdf file for the calendar, but I haven't been successful in downloading it, as it seems corrupted.

For now I'm resolving to pray the morning office, and maybe evening prayer. I have fallen off the wagon so much I want to make my resolution doable.

Merely temporary, unfortunately. It's back to bed really soon. Hope it helps some.

I had to check something about the "Shorter Christian Prayer."
Here's a link

I believe the description says it contains [only] the psalmody for Morning and Evening prayer with some other texts.

This is the type of book that I saw from the acquaintance.

Independently, at our novice formation class we were told that the Shorter version does not fulfill our Third Order obligation to pray Morning and Evening prayer. I don't think the "shorter" version contains everything that one finds in the four volume or one volume version of the Breviary (Divine Office, Liturgy of the HOurs.)

{If I'm sounding strident - I don't mean to be. I just have very little breath today because my due date is approaching. I find I have to sit down a lot. So, I guess this is sticking in my head a little.)

Helen, I vaguely remember hearing a similar thing. I thought that this version was pulled from the market a while back, but I can see I was wrong. But that's a good note to realize that it won't fulfill the Office obligations if you are bound to pray them everyday.

Can't wait for that baby to be here!

I am reading this thread with interest
Pardon my ignorance on this, but...
I received the Daily Roman Missal. Where does this missal fit into the Liturgy of the Hours, or do they have nothing to do with each other?
Thanks!

Christine

Good question Christine - a missal usually has the Mass reading and prayers for Mass.

Here's a link to the Catholic Encyclopedia explaining the word "liturgy."
liturgy

The Liturgy of the Hours is a different set of prayers which go along with the Church calendar. The "collect" prayer is the same at Mass and in the breviary (liturgy of the hours). "Collect" is the old word. Now the breviary says something like:
Prayer as in Morning prayer.

Another way of trying to say this. The closing prayer for Morning and Evening prayer from the breviary (liturgy of the hours) is the same prayer which closes the introductory prayers at Mass. (Just before we sit down to hear the readings.)

I'm probably muddling everything up here more than ever.

Let me explain what is actually in Shorter Christian Prayer:

Morning Prayer
Evening Prayer
Night Prayer

The entire 4-week psalmody is included, with the invitatory, psalm prayers, intercessions, closing prayer, etc.
There is music -- the same selections as Christian Prayer, right down to the song #s, without sheet music (a.k.a., the notes).
There are prayers and specific psalmody for the parts of the liturgical year, but they are much reduced, chiefly keeping to major feast days. There are specific prayers for Lent, Advent, etc., but again, much simplified.

Shorter Christian Prayer does *not* have the Office of Readings and does *not* have hours other than Morning, Evening, and Night (i.e., no daytime hours).

It is a good starter, and I'd certainly recommend it for someone who did not intend or expect to be able to pray hours other the Morning, Evening, and Night. If I remember correctly, it is about a third of the price of Christian Prayer, and even much less of a fraction of the 4-vol. set. As with Christian Prayer, I believe Shorter Christian Prayer is available in large type for those who prefer that.

ETA: My copies of Shorter Christian Prayer and Christian Prayer are nearly identical in wording (very few differences). If Christian Prayer is accepted by a third order or other group, and if Morning and Evening Prayer are the required prayers from Christian Prayer/breviary/Liturgy of the Hours, I can't see why Shorter Christian Prayer could not be used. Really, if you compare them side by side, you'd see how very similar they are.

This is great Kelly.
I'm wondering the same thing.

Is Morning Prayer like this?

The psalmody includes three psalms/canticles?
Reading from scripture
Responsory (sp?)
Canticle of Zechariah
Intercessions
Our Father
Closing Prayer

Thanks Kelly -- this version sounds like a great book at a great price.

It was ten years ago that I saw a small book called Shorter ... Perhaps they don't sell that book anymore. About the same time, I began formation classes. Perhaps the really shorter version was a problem at the time.

I'm sorry for any confusion I might have caused and I thank you for the correction and information.

To figure out where in the 4 weeks, as I understand it, you can just divide the week we're in (ordinary time, Lent, Easter, etc) by 4 and take the remainder, right? That's the easy secret I (think I) gleaned from reading about it last week. So the 10th week of Ordinary Time would be week #2.

Before I always had to look it up on the guide, which frankly I found more confusing than helpful. For this last week, it's been nice because the Proper of Seasons just tells me where to go for the psalms

That's interesting. I think I've had my copy of Shorter Christian Prayer for close to 10 years. It is published by Catholic Book Publishing, same as Christian Prayer. I'd give you the copyright year too, but that page fell out some time ago.
