Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As part of our onging Catholic outdoor movie festival, we have watched several films featuring miraculous healings and recoveries. Paul (9), sighed heavily after the last one, and asked, "If God wants us to be in heaven with him, why does he detain us?"

Anyone have a good quick explanation that a very distracted 9yo might understand?    I know this topic has kept theologians in business for years!

So we can help others get there?

Because He wants us to *choose* to Love Him and suffer a little bit for a little while so that He can shower us with rewards and surprises when we get there. The more we've chosen to Love Him, the more Love and Joy we will possess for all eternity.

Hi Macbeth,

I'm not great with answers to such "lofty" questions but I was wondering where you've been getting such great Catholic movies. Also, maybe you can provide us with a list - Thanks!

This life is the Path to Heaven. Just as you would not reach the summit of a mountain without climbing along the path, you don't reach Heaven without the pilgrimage. Some paths are short, some are long, but we all have to complete them. I'm sure Jesus doesn't want to detain us, that's why He's always helping us along!

Ok, Paul is only 9? I don't have such beautiful inquiries and I am much much older than he. Wow! I am very impressed.

Cool kid!

God bless the children! They are so much closer to Him
than some of us! They are part of our sanctity.

That would be right along my explanation. God Loves us completely and wants us to be with Him in heaven, but He doesn't want to MAKE us do something we don't want. He gives us this time to choose Him, to know, love and serve Him (to quote from the Baltimore Catechism) so we can be with him in heaven. That's why we have the gift of free will -- he wants us to freely choose and embrace Him. He even gave that choice to angels.

But of course He doesn't just leave us alone without help, that's why we have natural law, Jesus Christ, the Church, etc.

How about: "It's a mystery."

And I would probably add that the views expressed in the movie are the best attempts of other believers to give shape to their questions and answers, but that all of us see through a glass darkly.

Let him know that this is a topic that's been debated and discussed for centuries and that you love hearing him think of such big questions. Also share that you look forward to being a part of the journey that his questions will take him on.

With my kids, I usually also ask them what they think the answer is to their questions. So often they are expressing a need through the question, more than the question itself. Did the movie make him think of family or friends who suffer in this life?

Just a few thoughts. Cool kid.

Julie
