Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am having a field day with Patricia Polacco's books. A field day, I tell ya! You can all be assured that at least one of her books will be featured in the Christmas Mosaic .

Has anyone read her Welcome Comfort?

My library doesn't have it and I need to know if it portrays Santa Claus as a reality. I don't mind it if Santa Claus is present but focused on the real reason for season (Jesus) or as an analogy of St. Nicholas, but I don't want to list it in the booklist if it's just another fun, "Santa visits my house" book. It would have to have a lot of meaning for me to include it and I trust the judgement of this group.

Please let me know if you've read it and what you thought about it.

Thank you.

Cay, I checked out her website, and it says the book is about an overweight boy who is teased at school, Santa takes him for a sleigh ride on Christmas Eve and gives him a gold pin as a remembrance. Years later, the boy grows up to become Santa Claus. The main message is presented as 'Teasing is wrong!'

Welcome Comfort Activities

I haven't read the book, but I really like Patricia Polacco's books. This one sounds rather odd to me though. Has anyone actually read it?

I love Patricia Polacco's ethnic books. I haven't seen this one.

I'll confess that when I read the subject line I was thinking more along of the lines of Southern Comfort.

Jenn and Bridget,
You two girls are killing me.

Thank you for the sketch, Jennifer.
I don't think I'll list it. I'm entranced by Polacco's books at the moment (that's a completely different thread )and restaining myself from ordering all of them. I did treat myself and the girls to two of her books last week at the bookstore.

When we studied her at the Book Fiesta a couple years ago I only read her Halloween one. I forget the title (and too lazy to go look it up ) but it was something-Graves family.

I couldn't stand it. There was no point to the story and I thought it was terribly weak.

Since then I've read many of her ethnic stories and am totally in love with An Orange for Frankie .

But I think I'll leave out Welcome Comfort. Thanks again.
