Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DD13 came home from school 2.5 years ago. At that time, she absolutely hated art. She was in tears about trying anything.

So I "gave up" we quit formal art. She did some workshops, and it always come back looking like little or no effort was put in.

So I "gave up" on the art for her as a whole. I feel creativity is important. I'm not a particularly artist person, but I do consider myself creative. I decided to use that in some other areas, more 'artist' to see if we could entice dd13 into trying to create.

I started with some mixed media. It's neat stuff. Play with it until you like how it looks. It peaked her interest. Score one for mom.

Then we did some art journaling, she didn't care for it much, but there was no tears, no whining. What it did do, is introduce different techniques, and spiked her curiosity. Score 2 mom.

She then started snooping on youtube for tutorials. She's made several paintings now. She loves landscapes, but does well with abstract...because you can keep changing it until you like how it looks! She sold one of them, which was inspired by a video on youtube.

What excites me the most is this one, it is 24 x 32:

She has donated it to our parish for a silent auction, with proceeds going to the homeless soup kitchen. Opening bid was decided at the parish for $75. I can't wait to see what she raises for the homeless!

It's been interesting seeing her grow. She's still using other artists for inspiration of her paintings. But she has purchased a dvd set of art lessons, that will teach some really great basics for her dream of landscape painting, including how to transpose a picture to a painting!

"Doing" art isn't necessarily about lessons. It's more about inspiration, I've learned, and curiosity. I have also discovered that, often, being able to create art isn't really a 'gift of artistic ability', but the 'gift of discovering and learning artistic skills'. Now there are some people that are truly truly gifted no doubt, but most can learn to create nice paintings, drawings and other creations if given the right circumstances.

She is hoping to soon open her Etsy shop!! We are going to work on a few techniques yet, to help clean up her work a bit. Then she wants to start selling! I'm not sure how to help her grow it, but we'll learn as we go, I guess. (Any tips???)

Funny how we 'gave up' on teaching it and just let it happen. And low and behold, a real love for creating images.   She has already been asked to donate another painting for some one else's silent Auction. I think we'll have to set a limit on how many paintings she donates, or it will get really expensive.

This is so inspiring and wonderful!

You might want to take some time to read with her JPII's Letter to Artists.

Much of what is said in that letter feeds my soul as an artist and helps me keep perspective in my work.

I would also recommend you both reading Saving Leonardo. While I have to be honest, I have stalled reading my copy since the summer.    I did attend a few talks on the book at the Childlight USA conference this summer. This book is fantastic as showing how art is a reflection of our society. Most Christians don't like or understand modern art precisely because it reflect societies hopelessness.   I think that your daughter can benefit from understanding how we got to where we are in modern art....and maybe discern....if she is called to be a small ray of light to counter that. :)
