I confess to having BOUGHT a ton of coffee table books with the intent to use for the same purpose as well as to make our own beautiful gift-giving cards and wall art and yet...I.CAN'T.DO.IT! My hand with scissors canNOT make me cut those pages up. The thought to treat books respectfully must be so deeply ingrained I'm not sure I can ever cut something up that has been bound.  |

I have a few sitting in the bottom drawer of my coffee table with some GORGEOUS art that I really really want to cut up, but I just CAN'T!  |

My problem is I need to have something to keep the images once they are cut out. Free floating images get more ruined and lost than safe in the book. I can find the book.
So, do you plan the project? what do you do with your cut-outs?

Not sure what you mean by "plan the project". ??? I just sit down with the book and exacto pages out of it. Then I trim the art with my paper trimmer. I back with cardstock and then laminate. Before I laminate, I pencil on the back of the cardstock the name of the work, and the artist and date.
My organization of the finished cut-art is a modified form of Dawn's file crate system and I've kept up this system for several years now and it really works well for me. The majority of my file system consists of 29 folders in a file system which lives right next to my desk. There are 2 folders for each month of the year, and 5 folders labeled:
Ordinary Time
Lent
Easter
Advent
Christmas
On the folders for the year, I keep two for each month - so November's folders look like this:
November - Seasonal Plans and Happenings
November - The Holy Souls (each monthly folder is labeled with that month's liturgical focus - so October/Rosary, August/Immaculate Heart of Mary, etc.)

Most of the art I cut out is sacred art which coordinates with the liturgical year. So, those art images are filed under their appropriate month.
******************************************************
I keep two more art folders in my file system which thus far have been unorganized. They're just folders to stash my additional (non-liturgical) art. But, I have hopes of creating folders labeled:
Prehistoric to Medieval Art
Renaissance to Neoclassicism
Romanticism to Modern Art
Contemporary Art

So even though you didn't know what I meant by project, you have a place and everything planned before you cut out anything. That's my problem. I haven't even bought a laminator yet because I can't decide what to get.

Oh dear. Well, there's always STAPLES or a school supply store for laminating. 
QUICK REVIEW OF LAMINATORS....just in case you'd be interested:
For projects like the artwork printed on nice, glossy paper, I much prefer the cheap heat-laminators (Duck is a popular and inexpensive brand) you can pick up at Walmart for $20 bucks. The laminate is thicker and much more rigid than a Xyron no-heat laminate product. Duck heat laminators are super cheap and slow...and you have to feed items through one at a time, but the result is thicker, doesn't bend, and is rigid. You won't need to trim these because the entire thing goes in a pocket and gets laminated and comes out finished and done!
Xyron no-heat laminators are great for fast, easy laminating whenever you need to run something through, but they're pricey (always buy with a coupon at Michaels!!!). The benefit of a Xyron is in convenience and the ability to easily and quickly laminate a number of items all at once: just keep feeding them in and rolling them through the laminator. Xyron laminates right up to the edge of a piece of paper which means you can trim to the edges (can't do that with a DUCK laminator). BUT...they don't stick well/at all to tape (example: you'd like to use double sided tape to hang something Xyron laminated to a wall or cupboard...like chore charts!!). And...the laminate isn't very thick which means that the result will bend/fold.

Yes, it helps on the thickness, but then I am paralyzed on picking the right size. And if I'm using pouches, and the art is all different sizes, then it's even more for me. I do all my laminating at Staples but have been very unhappy with the trimming. VERY unhappy. I can cut straighter lines than what they did.
But thanks for hand-holding. I'm very slow to pulling the trigger on devices and gadgets and appliances in this house.

Who knew this would be polarizing! Well, ok...it does make sense. Don't be scandalized, people!!!!
Just for the record, I don't cut up nice coffee table books, but if I find a duplicate copy of something for a couple of cents, or it's a silly coffee table art book I pick up for a few cents at a thrift/secondhand book store....I ABSOLUTELY cut it up!!!!!!
Off to sharpen my scissors!

This is too funny. I literally am becoming a collector of big oversized art books because I've bought them at our library's used book sales for this very thing and I just can't cut .
I envision having your system Jen, it's wonderful  but I have to get over the shock Printing them on my deskjet just isn't the same 
Exacto knife is on my shopping list. Then I'll come back here and imagine you cheering

For the record, I once bought a cheap copy of Mary Azarian's woodcuts so I could cut it up, frame them and hang them on my wall... Then I realized that I had no wall space because I had too many bookcases!

Yes. I've seen that, too. And in addition, I have a couple of shelves that are shorter than 6 ft and on those, a picture on the top of the shelf, tipping back to lean against the wall looks very nice.

Oooh. I like this idea. I have been slowly organizing my (non-coffee table book ) prints into binders. I too laminate them for durability. My addiction to the laminating machine is another issue altogether. I really like that I can grab the binder off the shelf and flip through the prints and they are durable enough to be handled by the kids.

You know Jenn, I have this laminator by Scotch. I actually lucked out and found it at Walmart on clearance for $12. I use these 9x11.5 laminating pouches which are much cheaper than the scotch brand and wonderfully thick and durable. Then I simply trim them myself.

I actually bought an old tattered book (at a yard sale for 50 cents!) specifically to cut up just to use the text as a background for an art journal project.
Couldn't even do that!
I ended up tearing a page from the phone book and using that instead!
I'm hopeless!

I love you guys - you're fun!
I have been wondering how people come up with prints to use for picture study and kind of wondered how one would use an art book or coffee table book. I love the idea of having the print sitting out visible all the time, but how would you do it with a book? Hmmm...
I really need to visit a good used book store or check out the library sale section and see what I can find. I haven't ever cut up a book before, and despite by abiding love for books, I think I could do it.
