Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have CHC's A Catholic How-to-Draw?

If you do, do you like it? And if you like it, how do you use it? Do you use it for art instruction, or primarily for crafts and cards and such?

And finally, what ages would you say it is suited for? Thanks for any information!

Dawn,

We have it and I would highly recommend it. I think it's too advanced for my children (ages 7, 5 1/2, 3, 2, 1 mo.) to use for art instruction, but they LOVE the book for tracing the pictures to make cards for people or just for fun. Maybe one day they will follow the step-by-step instructions, but for now, I am satisfied just using it as a tracing book.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Christine! This was very helpful. My oldest has recently discovered a long-dormant artistic side (it was squelched by well-meaning teachers during his one year of preschool ).

He really enjoys doodling with colored pencils and I thought it would be nice for him to learn to draw some things. He was given a How to Draw Comics book but some of the images are not exactly appropriate .

Sounds like my younger two would have fun with it too!

Dawn,

We have had this resource for a few years and it sat on the shelf..mostly because Mommy is artistically inept. Recently, however, our almost seven year old son (he is a terrific self-learner) has been digging in and using it often. I am most impressed with his beautiful drawings. He is also doing a fine job teaching his 5 year old brother how to draw a Monstrance and palm branches, etc..

Blessings,

Kristina, thanks for your thoughts. It sounds like your little guys are having a fun time with it! I was thinking of getting this book for next year, but I'm going to order this to use now ... "strike while the iron is hot" and all that!

Also, for anyone else considering A Catholic How-to-Draw, I just remembered, if you have CHC's A Year with God, there are several examples of ACHTD activities included (Lamb of God, Child Jesus, Monstrance).

I am envisioning lots of ways to use this book ... For instance, we just found out that there will be a JPII-Blessed Monstrance traveling through our archdiocese this month. We may or may not get to see it, but I *do* want to try to make it to our very first Eucharistic Adoration one evening during Lent. The paper Monstrance craft would be a nice project to do as we discuss/prepare.

Thanks again, Christine and Kristina, and if anyone would like to share how they have used this resource, I'd love to hear about it!

We have had several copies of these over the years and use them all the time (use them to pieces, in fact...). I have a bin where I keep "How to draw" books of different varieties, such as how to draw bugs, how to draw animals and so on. The kids pull it out and use it frequently, especially for making cards and such.

Thank you all for your input. I ordered the book yesterday.

I am sure I will plan some projects around special days and events, but I also want to nurture more spontaneous creation ... just find ways to encourage my boys to be *more* creative, *more* often, and not just on my designated "art and craft" day.

I really have to allow them better access to materials. Right now everything is tucked away here and there, and Mama has to intervene before anything creative can happen.

For instance, this morning we are making get-well cards for my brother and I had to go dig out all the supplies from random locations (paper on a shelf, glue in a drawer, stickers in the Michaels bag ) ... of course all this eats up time, and the whole project could very easily get put on a back burner ...

I'd like to be organized, and yet allow freedom too! I will have to comb the archives as I am sure there have been threads on this before!
