Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm a bit late with a study here though I've been tossing around a couple ideas for more of mini art studies for this busy month. So anyway this is a look at Bernardino Luini's
Madonna of the Carnation

This is the painting that has been chosen this year as the Madonna & Child stamp by the US Postal Service.

Luini was born in 1475 in Italy. He was the best-known and most important member of the group of painters influenced by da Vinci during his stay in Milan. There is little known about his life.

National Gallery of Art has some specific information about this painting including this symbolism:

The Christ child is sitting in Mary's lap and turning to grasp a carnation growing in a pot nearby. During the Renaissance a carnation symbolized either the Crucifixion or the Virgin’s pure love. In this painting it suggests that Christ, even as an infant, embraced his future sacrifice on the cross.

Thanks Mary! I think we'll be doing a study of Jesse Trees depicted in art, now that you've got us started ...
