Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone,

There might be a thread on this already, so feel free to point me in the right direction. I just don't have a lot of time to search right now.

I am mainly looking for picture books but will also want 1-2 really good chapter books for read alouds.

Let me know if anything comes to mind.

Thanks!

On to Oregon is based on the true story of the Sager children, who lost their parents on the trail and continued on to Oregon alone. It is best for 6-9 grade, but might be OK to read aloud to younger children. I haven't read it in years, so you should pre-read to make sure it isn't too intense for your younger children. Disney made a movie based on this book years ago entitled Seven Alone. You can read a review here.

ETA: searched "oregon trail picture books" on Amazon and found this one that looks really good as a picture book option: Apples to Oregon. I'd like to read it myself!

Ryane, I read On to Oregon last year to Mark and Grace. We loved it. Luke listened on and off. There were a few intense scenes and the mother and father die, so I'm not sure if it is a good fit for young kids.
We loved Apples to Oregon. If you search the library for Apples to Oregon you can also find similar picture books under the "subject" section on the books information. That is how I find a lot of the picture books we use for different subjects.
Hope this helps.

Here's one activity I did with my children when they were younger that helped them understand the choices and dangers faced on the trail:

Get a wagon, just a kiddie wagon will do. Now have some boxes or stuffed brown bags labeled "Flour", "Beans", "Gunpowder", "Nails", etc. The children have to decide what they will need to put in the wagon. The wagon only has so much room in it. What will they leave behind? How many toys and clothes will they have room for? What about books? Pans and pots? Once the wagon is loaded, walk about with it. Every so often, stop and explain that you have encountered an obstacle: "Oh, no, a prairie fire!" or "Indian attack!" or "We have to cross a river." Then talk about how the settlers might have faced these dangers. When you "arrive" in Oregon, say a prayer of thanksgiving and have a snack of apples!

It was a lot of fun and really reinforced the things we learned about the brave souls who settled the West.

If you are looking specifically for the Oregon trail I recommend:
Minnow and Rose ( Judy Young) - Oregon Trail
Apples to Oregon (Deborah Hopkinson) - Oregon Trail

Apples to Oregon is my favorite - love it! I wrote a unit study for Homeschool Share on it several years ago. Apples to Oregon

If you are looking for general pioneer trails/westward expansion picture books here are some more good ones.

Westard Expansion/Pioneer Trails: 1843-69
Sunsets of the West (Tony Johnston)
A Packet of Seeds (Deborah Hopkinson)
Dandelions (Eve Bunting)
Going West (Jean Van Leeuwen)
Covered Wagons Bumpy Trails (Verla Kay)
Going West (My First Little House Book) (Laura Ingalls Wilder)
Elsie's Bird (Jane Yolen)

Has If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon been suggested? I haven't used this particular one, but others in the "If you...." series.
