Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a fun thread and discussion going in Picture Book Discoveries, but thought it would be good to have an actual "rabbit trail" thread with all the resources. Lighthouses are a great topic for unit study or rabbit trails - there is so much there, science, history, character study, literature.

The lifestyle of a lighthouse keeper is pretty fascinating. Talk about the "slow" life - since it's pretty isolated there wasn't much opportunity to over-commit . "Anythin' for a quiet life, as the man said when he took the situation at the lighthouse.” ~Charles Dickens

But just imagine the isolation many of these families faced. I've read some interesting stories of the education opportunities provided for lighthouse keepers' children - which for some was obviously homeschooling or correspondence school or tutor on island. Others boarded on the mainland during school year or some cases of boats ferrying neighboring island children to a small school just for them.

We followed some trails last summer in anticipation of getting to visit some in Oregon last fall. Here are some resources we found though we didn't use them all.

What other lighthouse resources do you have or suggest? Especially you coastal families who are lucky enough to have them in your neck-o-the-woods...

Our picture book list is here in the picture book forum.

National Lighthouse Day is August 7!!!!!!!   I didn't know that!    Something fun to celebrate and gives me a couple weeks to plan an outing to a new lighthouse around here.

....thoughts swirling.....

GREAT linked RESOURCES, as always, Mary!

We were given this map when we did a lighthouse study a few years ago.

We also purchased a lighthouse cookie cutter.....and made some yummy cookies!

Hope that helps! I love the idea of vacationing in a lighthouse! I always wanted to live in one!
