Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you were going to read through a book on US History with your 9yodd, which would you choose:
A History of the United States and Its People
or
This Country of Ours?

Thanks!

My nine year old dd did not care for This Country of Ours, so I am going to save it for my next rotation of American History. I am not familiar with the other book but my dd really likes Our Pioneers and Patriots as do I so that is what we are using.

I've answered my own question.    The one from the Catholic Schools Textbook Project is From Sea to Shining Sea. Has anyone used it?
Thanks!

I was going to suggest FSTSS. I like the textbooks from them. I have FSTSS, and All Ye Lands, too.

Thank you, Mary, for finding those threads for me! I've read them all and have decided to use FSTSS as our American History spine with lots of literature added in.

Just to let you know, we are following an American History Trail on Serendipity. In the next couple of days you'll get a preview of what the plans will look like, but there will be a story to follow and reading lists for each age level in the family. We'll do Colonial/Revolutionary studies in September/October, Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark in November, take a break in December for Advent studies, the second semester will take us through the Civil War.
Just another option to consider.

Jennifer,

I'm doing Am History with all 3 of my younger ones -- and I agree with what's already been said about This Country of Ours -- I personally don't like the way it's written and I've tried it before with my kids and NO ONE likes it.

I'm going to use the FStSS as the spine and augment with Eggleston book you've mentioned as well as using Seton's
Catholic Faith comes to Americas and Catholic Faith Comes to the New World (which is the 5th grade text and due out in Aug 31st)....

Thanks for sharing the info about Serendipity and Elizabeth's overview -- I'm going to do it a bit slower than y'all (starting with vikings and aztecs) but will definitely be keeping an eye on what y'all do (hate to re-invent the wheel, yknow? )

We did How Our Nation Began (old Catholic text that has been reprinted) with one of ours - very, very textbooky and really was best as a simple framework for lots of living books and not as a program to itself. I chose it because it was SHORT and thus we didn't spend lots of time reading it. He had done lots of informal reading prior to this and I know he was older than 9.

Basically, my 9 year olds learned most history skipping texts altogether and just reading lots of fun stuff. I might use a text as a guide for a sequence in strewing the books around - but I honestly let them pick whatever they want to read in terms of history reads until they are older.

My other son did no formal history until about 11 (tried to entice him into some history via science biographies or such but he really didn't read much history, wasn't that interested). Then by 11 or so, we did From Sea to Shining Sea with living books and interspersed with the Holling C. Holling Books. He didn't like history until this year! Now he is enjoying it and chooses to read some history though science is still his first choice.
