Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I like adding the occassional unit study to our curriculum and find my favorite way to do it is through the history side.

Does anyone know of a site that gives unit studies in some kind of historical order?? If you can point me to a catholic one, it really make my day!

Am I nuts for thinking this would be nice? Thoughts?

I found a few to use from homeschool share, but they don't give anything in historical order.

Trying to avoid the random stumbling around here, kwim???

Thanks!

Martha

Martha,

You probably already know about this site, but reading your way through history might be a place to start. It's a book list not chronological unit studies, but it might be a good starting place for creating your own.

I don't think you're crazy. I really like a chronological trek through history. It just seems to give the information some solidness to understand it in order. I know it doesn't work that way for everyone, but I'm with you on liking the chronology.

I'm going to allow more side trips into whatever grabs my son's interest this year, but our main history focus will continue to slowly work its way through time.

Yes, I am familiar with it and have had it printed off for some time now. I add those to our reading as I can!

My problem is that I really hate making my own units.    I'll add to them if something just comes along that fits, but I really don't want to make them.

Yes, I know. What am I doing on this message board then?!    I like incorporating them into our studies. I like using them during "breaks" because it's a break for me too. No planning, no grading, no __. Just spontanously pick up a good book and do something fun and interesting with it for a week or two or whatever.

Right now I'm on Story of the World 2 and add in catholic reading and Seton as I can. But I have 6 boys and this is the middle-ages! Knights and castles and plagues and crusades! Oh my!

I'm thinking I'd like to linger and meander a bit more through it with some historical literature unit studies.

Any more tips or references would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You may already be aware of these History Links. They are Catholic unit studies for history but they aren't on-line. You have to get the books so probably aren't what you are looking for. They aren't necessarily literature base (ie read a book and go off that) but we have found them to have good suggestions for activities and study. They haven't made all the units for the middle ages yet - the last so far in the series is right before that - "Early Medieval." They say the "Late Medieval" unit will be available soon.

No, you're not nuts - it would be a great resource. Wish someone was doing it.

You could suggest to Ami to make an index listing the historical books in chronological order. She might be open to doing that at some point.

Have you seen the Lepanto unit study from Heart and Mind Magazine? 1571, battle, crusade - all the action!

What about just picking a book that you know covers that time period (from the list Richelle mentioned) and do a google search on it and "unit study." I tried with Adam of the Road and Door in the Wall and got some hits. But this is a time period I would be careful of if the sites weren't Catholic (which is likely).

Good luck.

And RC Histoy has what I have heard is a wonderful literature and religion based history unit study. The first volume is the only one done at this time so also doesn't cover the time frame you are currently in. But looking forward to it

Mary,

What age do you think Lepanto is appropriate for??? My oldest (age 10) likes poetry...

tabbed RC history for a closer look later...

I have The Door in the Wall also and a few others, so I'm off to see what I can google from the net!

Thanks ladies!

Martha

I found this catholic site that looks mighty interesting! haven't had a chance to fully explore it yet, but thought I'd pass it on before I forget.

Chronological history for catholic homeschoolers

Not sure I inserted the link right...

ETA: Never mind.    Every single posted link on it goes nowhere.. ah well the search continues...

Sorry, Martha, I never answered. I did the Lepanto with my second son when he was 13. That was probably a good age for him. My oldest son would have had no problem with it at 10. So I do think it depends on the child. If you have one that already interested in poetry probably earlier would work fine. The unit study from Heart and Mind is definitely adaptable for all ages and one could summarize the poem for students and still do the study. The suggested Lepanto text has excellent footnotes and commentary.

Just wanted to mention that I recently purchased History Links for Ancient Egypt (sorry Martha, not the time period you're looking for) & I couldn't be more impressed! The work that has gone into this unit study is unbelievable. It's like a textbook in itself! Talk about saving mom ALOT of work! (We've been using RC History, which is also well-done, but it's more of a lesson plan/reading list format with activity books suggested.) History Links can be used for all ages plus they even include activities for toddlers. This particular unit has 55-pages jam-packed with info for a very reasonable price ($15). The best part, though, is that it's from a Catholic perspective!

Hi again Martha,

You probably have this all figured out already but thought I would add one more resource which is the History Pockets from Evan-Moor. The Hands and Hearts Website lets you look through these books page by page.

I have just purchased RC History, I was wondering after reading your post whether instead of buying all the activity guides recommended with RC, it would be more cost effective to buy History Links for the activities. To combine the two programs, what do you think?
