I saw the Maths folder sitting alone with no posts - so I thought I'd add the link to my favourite page of Maths information.

Leonie, I absolutely love this link. Thank you.

I am always looking for ways to re-vamp our math program. My girls are doing well with Saxon, yet there isn't all that much enthusiasm for Math. Every once in a while we go on a "math kick," reading Theoni Pappas' wonderful books and having fun with math. The girls are currently hooked on the game "Madmath," a simple, yet fun, game that reinforces the addition and multiplication facts. (It was recommended on CCM recently, but I forget who posted about it.)

We found the game at Young Explorers Online. http://www.youngexplorers.com/

The girls are enjoying it, although it is slightly expensive for such a simple game. (It contains a board, 16 game pieces and two nine-sided dice.) Still, every now and then a little something new sparks a bit of interest. I like to see them practicing addition and multiplication in their spare time.

Pam Sorooshain has a maths blog with some good games listed.

We jave played them because they can be played easily, by a number of ages, with few resources!

As long as we are discussing favorites, I thought I would mention that my children are really enjoying a book I found at the Bargain Books table in Barnes & Noble--Mensa Math by Derrik Niederman, Adam Hart-Davis, and Raymond Blum. My second-grader was happy to be able to do these puzzles, and the older girls got a kick out of them too. I would recommend this title for ages 6 to 9.

I have a daughter who is good at calculating in her head but lacks the motor skills for writing...any recommendations that would hold her interest in a fun way? She'll be 7 in March.

Maria,

Are you looking for books/resources to continue to inspire mathematcial thinking and mental calculations or are you looking to build the writing skills part of maths - maths workbooks, that kind of thing?

In our journals, we do maths, too.

We write lists for birthday wishes and parties, along with the accompanying budget.

We keep running totals of our our games of Up and Down the River.

You could write/draw/use numbers to explain the maths literature you have read - for example, any of Anno's books.

Hi Leonie!

Are you looking for books/resources to continue to inspire mathematcial thinking and mental calculations or are you looking to build the writing skills part of maths - maths workbooks, that kind of thing?

I'm looking for both or something that does this together...I bought the Usborne sticker math book for her and she likes it, but I'd like her to be able to write more without a workbooky approach as that isn't her "cup of tea" and I don't want to set her up for failure....

I really like the suggestion of Anno's books...I'd forgotten about those...thank you.

And I like your birthday budget idea. Juliana's birthday is coming up on the 1st of March so what a perfect time...thanks for that idea, too.

The other maths writing my children have enjoyed, Maria, involves writing their own sums or algorithms or word problems.

- wrtie as many different ways to make the date as possible eg 9 Feb - 9-0, 9+0. 3x3
- what is your favourite number? why? how can you mae this number - diagrams and numbers
- write a maths problem for dad (* or mum) to solve.

Hi Molly,

Theoni Pappas is the author of a number of books on math that are favorites among my children. Just today, my seven year old spent quite a bit of time reading "Math for Kids and Other People Too." The books are lighthearted, yet substantive, and engaging for young and old alike.

My daughter hates writing for math too. But I know she needs practice, she's in 5th grade. One of the things we started (just today in fact), is to have her write her math on a small chalkboard (it's a lap chalkboard I bought for her), and then she can easily write and erase. This helps with her perfectionist tendancies.

I told her we'll use this for math often, but we'll have to mix things up as well, and sometimes she'll do it on paper, sometimes on the dry erase board, some on the chalkboard, some orally, etc. She's very hands on, so this will be good for her.
