Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi there, here is my question. My dd is 5(6 in a few weeks) and is a VERY fluent reader. She reads words that are at a fifth grade level with ease but I primarily keep her at reading books at a third grade level. Now the question...sholud I still do anything with phonic with her? She does well at decoding new words but I do not want to miss anything. We used LSLF from CHC to teach her how to read but we did not even use them all,not even half, before she took of on her reading.
Thanks,

My son is like that also, he taught himself to read. My 2 cents is have her read outloud frequently so you can monitor her fluency. Also the Explode the Code books are kinda fun and she could easily work her way through those.
FWIW, last year I asked our evaluator that question and he said "Yes" a phonics program would insure nothing would be missed.

My 5yo is like that also. What I'm doing right now is correcting her "in the moment" when she's reading. She knows when she's gotten something wrong or doesn't know a word, and will hesitate on it or say it and look at me. I'll give her the right word AND the phonics rule or rules that go with it. Sometimes I do just give her the word though. Since she is decoding well, I'm not going to bore her with beginning phonics books (unless she wants them - she sees the 7yo doing them and sometimes wants to do the same). I'll introduce higher level phonics - if she needs it by then - in the higher grades (2nd, etc) when it's normally taught.

The way she picks up things, though, I think she'll just internalize the rules as I say them to her and her sister w/o a formal program. She's just like that. It would never work with my older one, so I don't want to say that what would work for us will work for you. I would just much rather spend that time doing something more fun than going over phonics rules she already knows intuitively!

Nicholas (11 now) taught himself to read. The only phonics I ever did with him were a couple of those throw away "blends" workbooks for fun. He already knew the sounds, so he wasn't really learning anything. Whenever he read aloud I corrected his pronunciation if necessary. I never limited the reading level of books he read, only selected based on content and subject matter. He still makes mistakes in pronunciation every now and then. I just correct him. On occasion I have also told him the phonics rule that goes with the word.

This is one of those things that makes homeschooling so great, and "Real Learning" even better. Some kids pick up phonics rules naturally, and do not need more than an occasional reminder. Others need constant reinforcement. For years I wondered why there are years of phonics workbooks made by some companies...these are for the kids who needs them.

Here's the tricky (and fun!!) part: YOur job is to figure out which kind of kid you have. And, to make things more intereteing, you may not find out for years, and by then, he might change. CM's habit of attention is a good policy for mom, too! and we must be open to changing things (books, techniques, attitudes ) when things don't work. This sounds like a very challenging job description...but it is also the most rewarding job you'll ever have.
