Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any sugguestions on living books about snakes? Aaron has a passion for them lately. He's caught 4 in the past 2 days .    We have Verdi, but after 100 readings, it's getting a little tiresome.

Thanks MacBeth. That should keep up busy for awhile. We do own Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, another one of Aaron's favorites. I just know that he is going to be a naturalist .

My snake enthusiast LOVES "Snake Secrets" by J.M. Roever. Last summer he pretty much slept with the book. Two weeks ago he found the first snake of the season and since then I find this book (left open ) all around the house. I could not find it new. I bought our copy used at half.com.

This thread helped me get started on my snake unit, so I thought I'd add a few resources I found for future searchers.

Singing Snake by Stefan Czernecki An Australian folktale of the origin of the didgeridoo

Forty Dreams of St. John Bosco which contains a dream called the "Snake and the Rosary"

The Day Jimmy's Boa ate the Wash The kids think this picture book is hysterical

I knew nothing about sea snakes who live exclusively in the water, so the book Sea Snakes by Souza was very informative. It has some good vocab and a glossary.

Snake Scientist is a detailed look at the red-sided garter snake in Canada. The photographs in this book and the sea snake book keep the little kids asking for them, even though they are a bit text heavy for the 5 and under crowd.

MacBeth's passing suggestion to eating snake reminded me of an excerpt from the non-fiction book The Long Walk by Rawicz. A man and his companions walked from a Soviet labor camp to British India in 1941. In part of the excerpt included in this book, The Greatest Survival Stories Ever Told, the group is crossing the Gobi desert surviving 3 weeks with only snakes for food. I'm going to read that part aloud to my kids, but I ordered the entire book for myself from the library.
