Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Rising 7th graders ds is doing Earth Science next year.

Upon someone's recommendation I looked at Doorway of Amethyst. It looks way more interesting than the big textbook I have for a spine.

I was wondering if anyone has seen it and knows if it has activities, other than crosswords mentioned on the site? The website has a nice list of other websites links that go with the different chapters.

I'd also like to know if it would be meaty enough for a 7th grader?

Thanks ladies!

I was looking at Mary Daly's A Doorway of Amethyst for my daughter who will be in 6th grade next year. Does anyone have any experience with it? If so, how did you end up using it?

Thanks,
Amber

Isn't it funny that there are no responses?!

I've been looking at that and have not pulled the trigger because I haven't heard anyone's review.

Yes Jenn,
I think we are going to have to bit the bullet and write our own reviews. I will just tell dh that it is my duty

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner! We used Doorway last year with grades 8-10 and they loved it! They liked Mary's (the author's) conversational style and interesting tidbits. The chapters are short and doable. I think Mary says it's a semester course. Upon Mary's suggestion, we added The Field Guide to Geology, which I also loved. We used parts of it as they matched the Doorway text making a little notebook of the illustrations - kids drew and narrated. I also really liked Mary's illustrations in the book - a lot of it is in color, which is nice and it's printed on good quality paper. Some people have complained of typos, but I didn't notice them, nor did my students.

Would younger kids enjoy this book, Margot? If so, how much younger? I'm wondering particularly about younger middle-school range, as I have a strong-reader 11-year-old who's very interested in geology.

Thanks!

Sally
