Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've re-posted this here from the Thanksgiving Lapbooks thread.

Marianna and I are building a Tower of Mercy as we are studying the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy this week. Beginning details of the cubes are in my Thanksgiving Plans post.

Here's the line-up that inspired us, we've adapted a few already. Marianna prefers St. Elizabeth of Hungary for Feed the Hungry, can you blame her after all your beautiful posts last week on the feast day?

Corporal Works of Mercy
Feed the Hungry - Thea Bowman, Dorothy Day
Give Drink to the Thirsty - St. Frances Cabrini, St. Katherine Drexel
Clothe the Naked - Blessed Theresa of Calcutta
Shelter the Homeless - Sarah, wife of Abraham
Visit the Sick - Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha
Visit the Imprisoned - St. Therese of Lisieux
Bury the Dead - St. Catherine of Siena

Spiritual Works of Mercy
Instruct the Ignorant - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Counsel the Doubtful - Mother Catherine McAuley
Admonish the Sinner - St. Therese of Avila
Bear Wrongs Patiently - Mary Magdalene
Forgive Injuries - St. Josephine Bakhita
Comfort the Sorrowful - St. Veronica
Pray for the Living and the Dead - Mary, Mother of Mercy

I made a simple box shape out of a manila file folder, card stock or small real boxes would work too, of course!

(See this thread on Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy for further brainstorming[/url])

I only have two minutes to poke my head in to say that this project is TREMENDOUS! I am going to do this with my children without a doubt, and it will be among the most memorable things we have ever attempted. I love the way you have layed this out and cannot wait to start gathering materials. My plan is to devote much of January to this worthy endeavor.

This is perfect!

Bury the Dead

St. Catherine of Siena Patron Saint Index, Wikipedia's article, Catholic Encyclopedia, and a podcast at SaintCast (haven't listened to it all but the beginning is great, they play 'The Saints Go Marching In' and talk about Holy Relics, St. Catherine is talked about 3/4 of the way through), we liked this Icon with Sailboat.

Marianna made a great observation today I thought I'd share. She frequently reads over my shoulder here but I am always amazed at the connections she makes that I haven't mentioned or even thought of sometimes! Back in July I asked about Nuns here and through that thread and the discussions we shared, she came to the conclusion that Sisters perform Corporal Works of Mercy while Nuns perform Spiritual Works of Mercy.

Spiritual Works of Mercy (list worded slightly differently for a 4th grade class)

I also wanted to apologize for how long this is taking me to post each one, I'm working around my husband's eBay listings.

Admonish the Sinner

St. Therese of Avila Wikipedia, Patron Saint Index, Catholic Encyclopedia, a long article at Catholic On-line, and another at the Teresian Carmel, and a third at EWTN.
Saint of the Day with MP3 capabilities, the entire text of St. Theresa of Jesus is now online as are famous quotes.

John Singer Sargent painted St. Teresa, and I like this one but do not know who painted it. Anyone??

Poems(inspired by??? St Theresa of Avila?) -
This one was called her 'Bookmark' at Women for Faith and Family and I can hardly wait to make it into one!

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

Bear Wrongs Patiently

Mary Magdalene     Patron Saints Index, and Catholic.org calls her "the Penitent", this New Advent's article, and Orthodoxwiki tells us why red Easter Eggs are associated with Mary Magdalene.

Women for Faith & Family with a lovely painting by de la Tour, Wikipedia has a long article with great paintings (1 small one is 'unclothed' as she is frequently portrayed). This Savoldo at the National Gallery is lovely!

Comfort the Sorrowful

St. Veronica    Icons at OrthodoxWiki, Mochi's Statue in Rome, last on the page (When a toreador holds the red cloth with both hands and shakes it before the bull, this movement is called veronica - named after the statue in St. Peter's. Too cool!)
New Advent article, Wikipedia with paintings and links, Patron Saint Index, an El Greco painting, and an ancient Icon for sale but really neat to view.

Marianna and I wrapped this up for now.
You can see our Tower here. I may revisit this, I think a report or pertinent prayer on the back of the cards she made would be a nice addition.

This is awesome, Jennifer. I'm keeping it in the back of my mind for after Epiphany.
Thanks for the wonderful idea.
