Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

...is here. Christian has it and is sick as can be. (Prior to getting sick he was also the most frequent baby holder--please say a prayer that Karoline evades this.)

What are your favorite flu remedies?

Elizabeth

I will be praying for your family. Our flu remedies (assuming repiratory flu) are:

- Alpha CF Cold and Flu Kids - little chewable homeopathics - we find effective
- Sambucol Elderberry syrup (Formula for kids and adults) - reduces the duration of the virus. Also give to everyone else as it can strengthen immunity
- chicken soup - our miracle liquid
- lots of water and diluted juice and warm tea if your children drink it
- hot baths with Masada Eucalyptus bath salts (California Baby Cold and Flu bath for infants)
- liquid vitamin C for everyone (Nature's Plus does a great liquid)

I will pray for Karoline especially - and I am sure that she will have nursing immunity.

Blessings

Oh, Elizabeth, I am so sorry to hear this. We will pray it does not move beyond Christian (and we will pray for his speedy recovery, poor guy).

Flu in our house means rest and sipping tiny bits of fluid like gatorade or ginger ale. Popsicles too - anything tasty and cool and just enough to get in some fluids.

I will look through my books today to see if I find any good advice.

yikes. i'm not ready for the flu. we are just in our second bout of colds and that led to an ear infection in baby gemma.

i really don't think there is much available to help with colds/flu, except sleeping. i tend to be hesitant to give syrups and cold meds since i read about strokes and PPA. i use a vaporizer, baby rub, showers and some tylenol for sleeping if necessary.

it's going to be hard to avoid the flu this year - pple who get the flu mist vax actually shed the live virus for up to 21 days.

hope you all stay well!

Yuck! Having the flu is no fun at all!

The only remedy I've found useful is SLEEP and lots of it! Juices to make sure you're hydrated and are getting some energy (to feed the body, not to get up and go). And did I mention sleep?

Praying that all get well soon and that Karoline Rose dodges this one.

Chicken soup (broth made with bones), Camphor oil rub for sore muscles (we like Tiger Balm), and Febriplex for flu symptoms.

And of course, Chamomile Tea !

Praying for Christian and that no one else gets sick.

I can't add anymore to the suggestions above, but I wanted to tell you that every year we get the flu in our house, sometimes more than once, and every year the youngest nursling is spared, and the toddler nursling either gets it very mild, or not at all. Karoline is young enough she still is protected by your antibodies from the womb and from your breastmilk, I would wager that she'll be spared. I hope none of your other children get it, or you either Mom!

I don't know if this actually helps, but I try to have lots of open windows when we are sick. The fresh air seems to help curb the germ spread and revives the sickies a little.

Elizabeth,
We will pray for poor Christian to have this be mild and short and that it doesn't spread to anyone else.

This is a good reminder to us who haven't got the flu yet to get the chicken broth in the freezer. Remember to use lots of garlic--fresh (add it in just after re-heating).

I've heard of steaming hot baths with lots of fresh ginger steeping. We like the Tiger balm also. Popsicles.

I've never had a nursing baby get sick with the flu either. Like Taffy said, "Sleep."

We've actually had luck with Oscillococcinum, and we almost never have luck with other homeopathics... but I think you need to take it as soon as possible when symptoms show up, or even before, as I have read it can act almost like a flu vaccine.

Praying for your whole family!!

I've heard the same thing Amy. Oscillococcinum is a
good one to have in the medicine chest.
We will pray for your entire family, Elizabeth!!

Oscillococcinum has always worked for us, quickly too. I just stocked up on it yesterday at the Vitamin Shoppe. For those not sick yet, push the Echinacea and Vit C. We have already warded off a couple of viruses before anyone got really sick.

Praying!

The actual flu hasn't hit yet. Do you mean a really bad virus?

I would be really scared for my newborn if it was confirmed influenza.

I could be wrong, but on the CDCwebsite it show very little influenza activity.

Do you all get a flu shot? We don't because its suspended in mercury, but every year I worry. . .

I bet the nursing baby will be fine.

I hope its not a bad flu year like it was several years ago.

Sure looks like the flu, Sarah. We don't get the vaccine because of the mercury. He's got a high fever, chills, body aches, a wet cough, sore throat--lasts longer than a week....

I think we have the flu too. It sure has all the symptoms though we haven't had them tested (!).

I was going to have Aidan vaccinated this year.   Most years, we don't and last year Aidan got pneumonia from the flu and went to the hospital for several days and then had a horrible seizure possibly due to the antibiotics they put him on.

The website CDC says that they are making some thimerosol free flu vaccines this year.

Also isn't there an anti-viral you can take if the flu is diagnosed in the first 24 hours?

There is Willa, but it always takes me longer than that to figure it out--particularly with the children, who can't really articulate those early symptoms. I also noticed that the CDC site said the flu has a dry cough. That isn't our experieince here right now (we have a wet cough). This is as bad as the flu if it's not the real deal.

Ditto here, actually. Plus I hate to go running to the doctor too soon, until I know I'm out of my league (usually when Aidan's osygen SATs start dropping).

The pediatric (for children 5 and under) flu vaccine is thimerasol-free. You can request it for your older kids, too, and it's the only kind that a woman should have if they are nursing a child, according to our pediatrician.

I'm so sorry about the illness in your family, Elizabeth, and in yours, too, Willa. I will pray for fast recoveries for all!

I remember how worried I was last year, having a baby in January at the height of flu season. The children and I did get vaccinated last year, since the mercury-free vaccine was available. We will probably do the same this year.

Whatever it is it sounds BAD and I'm sorry you all have to through that.

I didn't mean to sound preachy . I think I sound crabby because I don't feel good.

Oh, I sure hope it doesn't go through your house for weeks. . .and that you and the babe and your asthma boys are spared.

We'll pray.

I'm scared of the flu. I think its horror stories from dh. During flu season he's rounding and rounding at the hospital and there's always at least one white-knuckle case to follow with some little person.

Oops, I'm not trying to scare you. God will protect you.

Have any Lourdes water? Stay home and rest.
