Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please could I ask some prayers for my 17-year-old son, who's a "Rat" (i.e., a plebe/freshman) at Virginia Military Institute? He's been there a week today -- the first week for the Rats is "Hell Week," which is akin to military boot camp. He got to call home on Wednesday night and was still standing then -- apparently a bunch of kids have already left -- but it's been a pretty tough week.

We've been praying and sacrificing for him and his buddies all week, but would love some extra prayers to get him over this last hump, today and tomorrow. After Sunday he's still a Rat until February, and subject to some amount of hazing, but classes start this week, so that he can hide out in academic buildings and reconnect with his identity as a person with a mind and reason. After this week, I imagine that will come as a great relief.

He has said that the friendships he's made are incredible -- when they get a chance to talk to each other -- and he's finding humor in things wherever he can. Compared with actual military boot camp, VMI's Hell Week is relatively tame (a friend of mine last night was describing her son's experiences as a Marine recruit), but it still feels pretty much like hell to the people enduring it.

Anyway, I know he would appreciate your prayers, as do I. Thank you.

God bless,

Sally

Heard from him today, in a brief email: "So I heard you were freaking out because you weren't home yesterday when I tried to call. I figured you just weren't home yet, so I called my kinswoman [a.k.a. his older sister] . . . " Yeah, Mom, stop flipping out, already!

Anyway, he made it through, says Hell Week is now just a blur in his memory, and is excited to be getting down to his classes at last. He says the Ratline (from now until February) seems like one long Lent, with mean people around whose job it is to make sure you keep your penances. But his roommates are great, and his room has the best view in barracks, so all in all, he seems pretty content.

Thanks so much for your prayers!

God bless,

Sally
