Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK- I admit I have seen the book "A Year Down Yonder" by Richard Peck hanging around the audiobook shelves at the library for years now, but only recently picked it up.

After our Penderwicks binge, we didn't know where to turn for our next book, and since this is summer and the library shelves are a bit sparse, we came home with "A Year Down Yonder".

Now, I've read a WHOLE LOT of books in my life, but I have to go on record as saying that this book delivered the BEST one-two punch of any story I have ever read. I don't want to give anything away in case anyone has not read this book, but, honestly, we never saw it coming.

We're driving along, and the author comes out with the first punch- and there is literally a collective gasp in the car, then a moment of stunned silence while we try to absorb this news (could this be true?) and then we all burst out in uproarious laughter- so much so that I had to turn off the book for a few minutes until we could settle down.

That was the first punch... and even then we were not prepared for number 2- the author slips it in so quickly, right behind the first. More gasping and laughing. Outrageous. Oh, my- this was story-telling at its best. The superb narration probably helped a lot... but I know we'll never forget Grandma.

Monica- Head up... there is talk of "The Change" (of life) in this book, also there is the issue of babies born out of wedlock. These are not dwelt on in any bad way, but they are mentioned. I was fine with it because my kids are getting older, but it might spark questions.

Jennifer S: which book of his should we try next?

A Long Way from Chicago is actually the story of Mary Alice and Joey before a Year Down Yonder. Can not remember if there is any iffy content. Only my older kids have read any of Richard Peck's books. I think mainly my twelve and up crowd. Hmmm...now I need to go reread his books.

My husband is reading this for our family nightly read aloud. Sadly I dozed off the last couple of nights so I have to go catch up with the story before tonight's episode...
