Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just want to make a pitch for the wonderful Hillsdale Dialogues available for free download at Hillsdale.edu Go to the section on "online courses" and scroll down to the bottom. There is a large selection of topics, mostly grouped by author like Plutarch or Shakespeare or what have you, as well as some historical discussions (on Medieval times, the Renaissance, the Reformation) OR great men (Churchill). The MC is Hugh Hewitt-not Catholic but sympathetic to Catholics and politically conservative. He typically has Hillsdale pres,, the very articulate and I think, kind, Larry Arne, on hand to discuss the issue, and often another prof who is a specialist on the topic. The discussions start out on some public affair issue then typically segue to the selected book/ author/ historical period, usually tying the two together in some way.

These dialogues would be appropriate for high schoolers (my own senior high schooler is starting the Churchill segments) but are ESPECIALLY great for us Moms, too! I am just loving listening to them to get myself up to speed on things. Each show is a mere half hour, so easy to download into your podcast queue and start listening when ur ready. One of my kids is reading Herodotus now, so I was thrilled to find a 2 segment offering on Herodotus and it was very good. I could then teach and actually sound like I knew a little something about the 'Father of History" and it certainly enhanced my own enjoyment of the readings. The Shakespeare segments are especially good: hamlet, tempest, Lear and I misremember the fourth. Anyway, a GREAT resource!

They also have a free online Great Books course which I've been in for a while and it is so good! Obviously not for credit, but you could easily work it into a your own great books course for a high school credit. The intro alone, by Dr Arne, is worth listening to.

There is also a free American history course and a US Constitution course, both of which are purportedly excellent. I wish I had had access to these for some of my older children!

Thanks Kelly! My son goes to Hillsdale. You would think I would have been aware of this! I guess I should do a better job staying connected.

It took him a while to find his groove. He plays football there, so that plus the very challenging academics took some getting used to. However, this year he is a junior and seems to have settled in. He's really enjoying his classes. I love visiting there. It's a small school but I love the buildings and statues on campus. My daughter is thinking about attending there as well, depending on acceptance, of course.
