OK. Those of you who have known me for a long time know that I am a purist--no editing, no abridgement of text or "retelling" except in rare cases. Here's one  : The Princess and the Pea, by Lauren Child and Polly Borland, is delightful, not just for the re-written text, which is alliterative and crisp, but for the illustrations, which are photographs of real "doll house" scenes filled with paper doll people. The real beauty is in the details. Though the rooms are sparsely decorated, each has a certain feature that will make the kids (and you!) say, "Oh!" Imagine a tiny delft-tiled fireplace, a "tree house" made from a fallen tree branch, colorful fabric mattresses stacked on a miniature bed...and more. Wall sconces and chandeliers are lit, though little! Gilded chairs! Paper and fabric costumes!
The end notes include hints about how the scenes are created...the rooms are each corn-flakes boxes!

Thank you for the recommendation. I just put it on hold at my library.
My children know their purist mother. I have heard more than once, "Daddy, that book's abridged. Mommy only likes the complete stories."

Lots and lots of books by Lauren Child at my library, but not this one.

Lauren Child is also the creator of "Charlie and Lola." I wish we did not like Charlie and Lola as much as we do . The books and the show are tops with our youngest two.

My kids thought Charlie and Lola was a hoot when we watched them on TV (we were in a hotel room either in Germany or England either waiting for a house or moving to a different country ... that's pretty much the only time we watched television).

This is by the same team that does my favorite version of Wilde's The Selfish Giant. I am excited!
Charlie and Lola are also appreciated by a couple of my children. We have the wobbly tooth book, the i-won't-eat-a-tomato book and the i'm-not-really-sick book (can't think of exact titles)!
