I'm hoping that some of my fellow office supply geeks will have an opinion on decent magazine files.

I'm going to use magazine files for 3 or 4 different purposes:

1. magazines (gasp)
2. to group picture books by subject, in place of my fabric bins which take up too much space (these are likely to see heavy use, being pulled off the shelf, etc.)
3. files (got the idea from Jen's blog)
4. to keep flimsy workbooks, etc from slumping on the shelf.

Each of my kids has one of these (courtesy of an old 4real thread) for their workbooks. I think those work well for that. But I need something with a front for my other uses, and it has to be sturdy, inexpensive (I need a lot of them), and look nice (no bright plastic colors). Any ideas?

I was looking at the Martha Stewart holders, but at $12 a piece, that will get expensive in a hurry. On the other hand, I guess I am willing to pay up to have something that will last longer.

Walmart and Target are the cheapest that I can find. $5 a piece...though, one time I did find some on clearance at Wal-Mart for $1.50!!! Granted, they were teal...but I had them in bins holding workbooks anyways so that were hidden...

I love the Martha Stewart ones...but I can't pay $12 for a pretty pattern. Wish I could...

Angela,

I am in the process of finding magazine files too - for similar purposes to you. I find that they help to keep shelves tidy for older kids and also help organize picture books for littles.

I have bought many different types and prices over the years. IMO the ones that are the most durable for the lowest cost are the Ikea Kasset ones. Mine have lasted me years, kids can take them on and off shelves, they don't collapse and they look good.

Problem is that whilst they are only $3.99 for two at Ikea, they are $12.99 at Amazon. For those who don't live near Ikea (or who really don't like to go to Ikea)that is a problem. I was all set to just buy the Bankers boxes magazine files but quite providentially, we will soon be visiting family quite close to an Ikea, so my poor husband (who REAlLY dislikes Ikea) has agreed to let me run into the Ikea Marketplace and stock up on the Kassett files!!!

Oh drat, I was just at Ikea on the other side of the state a few days ago....I might make a run in to there the next time we are over in that part of the woods. Thanks for the heads up!

Sadly, our nearest Ikea is about 8 hours away. It looks like the Kasset holders are $12.99/2 pk on Amazon, though, which is still cheaper than the Martha Stewart holders.

The only problems I have with going to Wal-Mart is that a)it's Wal-Mart, and therefore packed solid 24 hours a day and b)I'm not sure I want to fight through all that just to find out they only have 3 holders and I need more like 20.

(Actually, I'm not really sure how many I do need, but I think it's at least 12.)

Can you get basic ones and paint, stamp, glue scrapbook paper to, glue wallpaper to, or otherwise embellish the outsides?

I use the Flyt files from Ikea, which do need to be replaced periodically. They are fine, though, for real magazines that are not in and out daily. I know youdon't have Ikea, but the are very similar tothese from Uline.

Those look great, Karen. And I have some cute duct tape. The kids would love to cover their own mag holders.

I don't know if you ever found anything, Angela, but I just came across these bins which might be an alternative to the magazine files for some of the items you mentioned.Durable Book and Binder Holder

I just came across this bulk office supply site that has many affordable options for magazine files. I especially like this inexpensive banker's version in cornflower blue, which also comes in persimmon

If you can get someone to go to an ikea for you, I promise it is worth it. After pricing them around last time I was in need, I waited until I could get there.
I make my husband stop every time he goes to Pittsburgh to fly out for business. It is a couple hours from our home.
But, they are 1.99 for 5 holders. I cover them in fabric, scrapbook paper, wrapping paper or whatever for where they are, or what they hold or whatever. The hold up FABULOUSLY.
Only other thing I have liked as well were the ones I made from Laundry Soap boxes over 20 years ago [:$] There still going strong!
Oh no, it's true! I am old.
